Touch 'Em All: Jeter looks likely to open on DL

Derek Jeter will likely join Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira and Curtis Granderson on the New York Yankees' star-studded disabled list for the season opener against the Boston Red Sox on April 1.

Derek Jeter will likely join Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira and Curtis Granderson on the New York Yankees' star-studded disabled list for the season opener against the Boston Red Sox on April 1.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman says it's "more likely than not" Jeter will start on the DL because of a sore left ankle, still recovering from surgery last October.

Eduardo Nunez, known for his bat more than his glove, would fill in at shortstop for the 13-time all-star, who broke the ankle Oct. 13 during the AL Championship Series opener against Detroit and had surgery a week later.

Reds coach has cancer

Cincinnati Reds third base coach Mark Berry says he has been diagnosed with cancer on his tonsils and neck lymph nodes.

The 50-year-old traveled to Cincinnati on Wednesday to have a biopsy taken on his lymph nodes. The results came back positive.

Berry, who has been in the Reds organization for 30 years as a player, minor-league manager and coach, told the team Sunday.

The native of Oxnard, Calif., intends to stay with the team at least for home games. One course of treatment requires radiation for 35 consecutive days. He will miss some trips.

Rangers claim LHP Mills

Lefthander Brad Mills has been claimed by the Texas Rangers off waiver from the Los Angeles Angels.

Mills was 1-0 with a 6.00 ERA in three exhibition games with the Angels. In his only major-league appearance last year, Mills threw five scoreless innings and allowed three hits on July 8 against Baltimore and gained the victory. He was 5-10 with a 5.86 ERA in 19 starts and two relief appearances at triple-A Salt Lake.

He is 3-3 with a 7.76 ERA in 15 career big-league games.

Righthander Neftali Feliz, who had reconstructive elbow surgery last August, was put on the 60-day disabled list to clear a roster spot.

Astros sign Cedeno

Shortstop Ronny Cedeno agreed to a one-year contract with the Houston Astros, who informed infielder Tyler Greene that he will not make the season-opening roster.

The 30-year-old Cedeno is an eight-year major-league veteran who hit .259 in 78 games with the New York Mets last season. He was in the Astros' starting lineup for Sunday's exhibition game against the Miami Marlins.

Houston also optioned outfielder J.D. Martinez to triple-A Oklahoma City and reassigned catcher Jason Jaramillo to minor-league camp.
