Touch 'Em All: Angels' Mike Trout youngest 40/20 man

When Angels phenom Mike Trout stole two bases against the Red Sox on Thursday, the Millville marvel became the youngest player since at least 1901 to steal 40 bases and hit 20 homers in a season, Los Angeles of Anaheim's website says.

When Angels phenom Mike Trout stole two bases against the Red Sox on Thursday, the Millville marvel became the youngest player since at least 1901 to steal 40 bases and hit 20 homers in a season, Los Angeles of Anaheim's website says.

(We figure they're using 1901 as a benchmark just in case some Sioux City Cornhuskers strongboy had better numbers in the century before last.)

Trout was 21 years, 16 days when he did it. The Houston Astros' Cesar Cedeno accomplished the feat in 1972 at 21 years, six months and one day.

Trout leads all rookies this year with 24 homers, 72 RBIs and 45 walks - and having his head screwed on straight.

"All those stats don't matter unless you reach the playoffs," Trout said. "But it's been pretty surreal."

Head games

Minnesota's Scott Diamond has been suspended for six games by Major League Baseball for a pitch thrown near the head of Texas' Josh Hamilton in the Rangers' 10-6 victory over the Twins on Thursday night.

The suspension and undisclosed fine were announced Friday, but Diamond is appealing and remains on the roster.

Diamond was quickly tossed by plate umpire Wally Bell after buzzing Hamilton in the third inning. Twins catcher Joe Mauer had been hit by a Roy Oswalt pitch in the top half of the inning.

After the game, the lefty said he was just trying to pitch inside.

Hamilton said on Friday that he could feel the ball whizzing by the back of his neck, but that he didn't think Diamond was trying to hit him.

Comeback?

The Astros have sent a scout to look at a 50-year-old righthander named Roger Clemens of the independent Sugar Land Skeeters. Houston owner Jim Crane said he's open to adding Clemens, because "the fans might like it . . . but the Astros wouldn't want to do it for the money, the extra gate or anything like that." Of course not!
