A novel solution for Mets: Don't trade Reyes, rent him

Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports has an interesting twist on what the Mets should do with MVP candidate Jose Reyes - rent him out, then re-sign him.

"If Reyes really is intent on re-signing with the Mets this offseason, he'd encourage them to deal him," Passan wrote. "Get some more talent to put around him and David Wright. A Reyes rental would pull at least three good pieces. That's three more than the Mets have now, and as long as they stay among the bottom half of records, they wouldn't even lose their first-round pick for signing him."

Seattle GM Jack Zduriencik said he will not trade ace Felix Hernandez, a 16-game losing streak notwithstanding.

Just a suggestion

If the Phillies really want to add Hunter Pence to the lineup for the next two-plus seasons the way to do so might be to relieve Houston of some of its untradable slop.

Tell Ed Wade, "We'll take Pence and give you three minor-leaguers plus we'll knock $12 million off your 2012 payroll by taking Brett Myers, too."

The Phillies would have to pay Myers $3.67 million for the rest of this season but could shed him in the offseason for a single-A okee-doke.

Would it be any worse than having David Herndon sitting at the end of the bullpen bench?

Noteworthy

Cincinnati sent outfielder Jonny Gomes to Washington for a pair of minor-leaguers.

The eight-year veteran hit .211 with 11 homeruns and 31 RBIs as a part-time starter.

The Reds got back outfielder Bill Rhinehart and lefthander Chris Manno.

The Red Sox put struggling rightfielder J.D. Drew on the 15-day DL (sore right shoulder) and recalled infielder Drew Sutton from triple-A Pawtucket. Drew is batting just .219 with four homers and 21 RBIs in the final year of a five-year, $70 million deal.

Elsewhere: Matt Holliday was out of the St. Louis starting lineup with a stomach virus, manager Tony LaRussa said. . . . Detroit outrighted third baseman Brandon Inge to triple-A Toledo. The 34-year-old was designated for assignment on July 22 after the Tigers acquired Wilson Betemit from Kansas City. Inge hit just .177 with one home run in 70 games this season. . . . Orioles lefthander Mike Gonzalez began serving a three-game suspension for throwing behind Boston's David Ortiz on July 10, and will miss his team's series against the Blue Jays. . . . The O's activated DH Vladimir Guerrero off the 15-day DL and optioned righthander Mark Worrell to triple-A Norfolk. . . . Braves third baseman Chipper Jones didn't start against the Pirates after he strained his right quadriceps on Monday night. . . . Arizona reinstated closer J.J. Putz from the 15-day disabled list and placed infielder Geoff Blum on it with a broken right pinkie finger.
