Phillies' payroll pushed to record $158.9M

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Since last Opening Day, the Phillies have traded for Roy Oswalt and signed Cliff Lee. Those moves, plus built-in raises for holdovers, has pushed the projected payroll for this season to a record $158,961,000, according to figures compiled by the Daily News.

And that's after subtracting the reported $11 million the Phillies received from the Houston Astros as part of the Oswalt deal. The figure was calculated using a representative 27 players in camp and could change depending on the final composition of the roster.

That's still an increase of more than $20 million from just a year ago and nearly a fourfold jump from 10 years ago when the payroll was $42,520,500.

Roy Halladay received a raise from $15.75 million to $20 million, Cole Hamels from $6.65 million to $11.5 million.

While the contracts of Raul Ibanez ($11.5 million), Brad Lidge ($11.5 million) and Jimmy Rollins ($8 million) expire at the end of the season, the Phillies are still on the hook for guaranteed contracts totaling $108.95 million to just nine players in 2011. *
