Phillies Notes: Phillies' Rollins sits out game with foot injury

After Monday's win over Colorado, Jimmy Rollins limped to the Phillies' clubhouse. He sat down at his locker but couldn't go any farther. Reserve infielder Cody Ransom rolled Rollins on his chair into the trainer's room for treatment.

After Monday's win over Colorado, Jimmy Rollins limped to the Phillies' clubhouse. He sat down at his locker but couldn't go any farther. Reserve infielder Cody Ransom rolled Rollins on his chair into the trainer's room for treatment.

On Tuesday, Rollins could hobble into the trainer's room.

"That's progress," the shortstop said.

Rollins was out of Charlie Manuel's lineup Tuesday with a bruised left foot. He could miss the next few games, Manuel said. X-rays taken after Monday's game were negative.

The shortstop fouled a ball off the outside of his foot in the second inning of Monday's game but stayed in for the remainder of the victory. It wasn't until Rollins stopped putting pressure on the foot that the pain really started.

At that point, Rollins, who already has spent two stints on the disabled list, said he wondered if he had broken his foot.

"It's like, 'Dang, something else?' " Rollins said.

But Rollins is hoping for a quick return this time.

He said with treatment (and lots of Tylenol), the pain was significantly less severe Tuesday than it was Monday. He sat out batting practice and watched from the dugout.

If he makes as much progress overnight, Rollins said it's possible he could play Wednesday against Arizona. If not, Thursday.

"It hurts pretty good," Rollins said.

During the Phillies' five-game winning streak, Rollins hit .364 (8 for 22) with five RBIs. In the 26 games before that, Rollins was hitting .181 (19 for 105). The Phillies were 12-14 in that span.

Tuesday marked just the second time all season that Manuel filled out a lineup card without both Rollins and Chase Utley.

Wilson Valdez started at shortstop for Rollins on Tuesday. Placido Polanco started his fourth straight game at second base and Greg Dobbs started at third. Manuel appears to have settled on Polanco as his starting second baseman while Utley remains out. With Polanco at second, it allows Manuel to insert more offense at third base.

Of course, with Rollins out, that negates everything.

"It's just a foot," Rollins said with a smile.

Moyer heading west

After seeing doctors Tuesday, lefthander Jamie Moyer made the decision to seek a second opinion on the strained ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow.

Moyer will visit surgeon Lewis Yocum in Los Angeles on Wednesday. Yocum, the Angels' team physician, often performs Tommy John surgery on pitchers on other teams.

The 47-year-old pitcher has said he will consider all options before surgery. His hope is to be able to rest the elbow and avoid surgery. Still, it's unlikely Moyer pitches again for the Phillies this season. He can become a free agent at season's end.

Extra bases

Manuel said closer Brad Lidge was unavailable Tuesday after throwing 64 pitches in two days. . . . The Dodgers signed infielder Juan Castro, who was released by the Phillies on July 17, to a minor-league deal. Castro is still being paid the rest of his one-year, $750,000 deal by the Phils. . . . Nationals phenom Stephen Strasburg was scratched from his start Tuesday after having difficulty warming up. That could mean the Phillies will miss Strasburg, who was scheduled to start Sunday's series finale in Washington. . . . Roy Halladay makes his 22d start Wednesday. His ERA in July is 1.69 in four outings - and that includes a five-run start against Chicago earlier this month.
