Long-awaited Philly parade set for Friday

The last time Philadelphia held a victory parade for a sports team, "Thriller" was the nation's favorite dance jam, Ronald Reagan occupied the White House and "Return of the Jedi" was tearing up the box office.

The last time Philadelphia held a victory parade for a sports team, "Thriller" was the nation's favorite dance jam, Ronald Reagan occupied the White House and "Return of the Jedi" was tearing up the box office.

It has been a long 25 years.

But tomorrow, Philly sports fans can party in the street once more at a parade for the victorious Phillies, who beat the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 5 last night to clinch the World Series.

Kicking off at noon, the parade will start at 20th and Market, proceed to City Hall and continue south on Broad Street to Citizens Bank Park. It should arrive at the Bank by about 3 p.m.

The city is encouraging fans to take mass transit and asking drivers to avoid Center City streets at midday.

The city has been cagey about releasing details of the parade before the end of the series because the Phillies, who last won the World Series in 1980, were so fearful of a jinx.

Previous parades were in 1983 when the 76ers won the NBA Finals, 1980 when the Phillies won the World Series and in 1974 and '75 when the Flyers won back-to-back Stanley Cups. *
