from the Oakland Athletics yesterday, the second time in a week the defending National League West champions added a player with a history of blowups.

In exchange for the volatile outfielder, the Padres sent minor-league pitcher Andrew Brown to Oakland. The Athletics are giving San Diego $1,360,929 to cover part of the approximately $2.05 million Bradley is owed for the remainder of the season.

San Diego acquired catcher Michael Barrett last week.

Oakland placed Travis Buck on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right thumb.

The Missouri Division of Alcohol and Tobacco Control will take no action against a restaurant that served St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Josh Hancock before the drunken-driving accident that led to his death in April.

The division said all information from witnesses indicated Hancock was "consuming intoxicating liquor in moderation" and was "very lucid" in the hours before he died.

Florida Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez was named as a coach of the NL all-star team, replacing New York Mets manager Willie Randolph, who will undergo shoulder surgery. The game is July 10 in San Francisco.

Willie Mays will be honored with a nationally televised tribute before the All-Star Game in San Francisco next month.
