Phillies Minor League Report: Tyson Gillies earns golden sombrero in IronPigs' loss

Here's how the Phillies' minor-league teams fared on Sunday, July 14:

Lehigh Valley IronPigs – Triple A

The IronPigs fell to the Syracuse Chiefs, 2-1, at NBT Bank Stadium in Syracuse, N.Y.

The teams traded scoreless frames in the first five innings, but finally put runs on the scoreboard in the sixth.

Lehigh Valley struck first. Shortstop Freddy Galvis doubled to leadoff the inning. Two batters later, right fielder Leandro Castro didn't waste the opportunity and hit a two-out single.

Left-handed starter Greg Smith quickly surrendered the lead in the bottom of the inning. He gave up one run on five hits and a walk while striking out three over 5 2/3 innings. He did not factor in the decision.

Syracuse scored the winning run in the eighth on a triple and a double off righty B.J. Rosenberg, who went two innings in relief.

Galvis and Castro went 2-for-4 and were the only multi-hit performances.

Left fielder Tyson Gillies had a particularly rough day at the plate and wore the golden sombrero for his four-strikeout game.

The loss dropped the IronPigs to 50-48 at the All-Star break. Third baseman Cody Asche and second baseman Cesar Hernandez will represent Lehigh Valley in the All-Star Game on Wednesday. The season resumes Thursday with a four-game series against the Columbus Clippers at Coca-Cola Park.

Reading Fightin Phils – Double A

The Fightin Phils lost to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 7-5, in 12 innings at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading, Pa. It was Reading's seventh consecutive defeat.

Fans were treated to a game full of offense as both teams sprayed 14 hits in the game.

The runs started early as Reading took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Designated hitter Derrick Mitchell reached on a leadoff single and scored on second baseman Albert Cartwright's RBI single.

Right-handed starter David Buchanan only allowed runs in one inning, but it was a four-run third. He allowed four runs on two home runs in the inning. He finished with those four runs allowed on 10 hits and a walk over seven innings. He struck out six.

Trailing 4-1 in the third, the Fightin Phils started to chip away at the lead. First baseman Jim Murphy recorded a two-out RBI double to score shortstop Troy Hanzawa, who had a leadoff single.

The Fightin Phils completed the comeback with a two-run seventh. Right fielder Anthony Hewitt hit a solo home run to bring Reading within a run. Then, third baseman Tyler Henson, Hanzawa and center fielder Zach Collier all singled to even the score.

In the 11th, New Hampshire took the lead with a home run, but Reading answered. Catcher Sebastian Valle reached on an error, moved to second and third on two wild pitches. Mitchell extended the game with an RBI single with two outs.

An inning later, a two-run home run off southpaw Bobby Bramhall proved to be the game-winning hit.

Murphy finished 3-for-6 with two doubles and an RBI to raise his average to .291.

The Fightin Phils are now 38-54 on the season. Reading will look to snap a seven-game losing streak by sending left-hander Austin Wright (3-4, 6.87 ERA) to the mound when the Trenton Thunder come to town Monday.

Clearwater Threshers – Class A-Advanced

The Threshers were routed by the Charlotte Stone Crabs, 8-1, at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Fla.

Clearwater pitching was torched for 17 hits in the game. Right-handed starter Perci Garner (6-2, 3.95 ERA) allowed five runs on 11 hits and a walk over 5 2/3 innings to take the loss.

The Threshers' only run came on a solo home run by right fielder Cameron Perkins in the fourth. It was his fifth blast of the season.

Third baseman Harold Martinez (2-for-4 with a double) and catcher Logan Moore (1-for-3 with a double and a walk) accounted for the other hits.

The Threshers fell to 46-43. The series will end Monday as left-hander Ethan Stewart (0-3, 7.00 ERA) takes the ball for Clearwater.

Lakewood BlueClaws – Class A

The BlueClaws defeated the Hickory Crawdads, 5-1, at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood Township, N.J.

In the second inning, catcher Justin Dalles, third baseman Mitch Walding and right fielder Brian Pointer singled to load the bases with one out. Lakewood could only manage one run as second baseman Alejandro Villalobos lifted a sacrifice fly to the outfield.

The BlueClaws added to the lead with a three-run third with those same hitters. Dalles doubled home left fielder Jonathan Roof, who hit a leadoff single. Walding followed with an RBI single to score Dalles. Villalobos capped the inning off with an RBI groundout.

Lakewood's final run came in the fourth when left fielder Larry Greene, who entered the game the third, doubled and later scored on Art Charles' single.

Those runs were plenty for right-handed starter Miguel Nunez (7-7, 4.36 ERA), who pitched six scoreless innings. He allowed only three hits while striking out three for the win.

A ninth-inning run allowed by righty Ramon Oviedo ruined the shutout.

The BlueClaws improved to 37-54. Lakewood will turn to right-hander Nic Hanson (2-1, 3.31 ERA) when the series concludes on Monday.

Williamsport Crosscutters - Class A-Short Season

The Crosscutters beat the Aberdeen IronBirds, 8-6, at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, Md.

The first five Williamsport batters reached base to take an early lead they would not look back on. Center fielder Gustavo Martinez drew a walk, second baseman Andrew Pullin singled and right fielder Dylan Cozens walked to load the bases with no outs. Third baseman Zach Green received a free pass to push a run across and designated hitter Andrew Knapp delivered a two-run single. Catcher Gabriel Lino finished the inning with an RBI single for a 4-0 lead.

In the third inning, left fielder Justin Parr extended the lead with a two-run triple to make the score 6-0.

Right-handed starter Jon Prosinski allowed two runs on six hits and a walk over four innings. He struck out five, but didn't factor in the decision.

Offensive standouts for the Crosscutters include: Pullin (2-for-5 with a walk and a run scored), Green (2-for-4 with a double, a walk, two runs scored and two RBI), Knapp (1-for-5 with two RBI), Lino (3-for-4 with a double, a walk, a run scored and an RBI and Parr (2-for-4 with a triple, a walk and two RBI).

The Crosscutters improved to 15-11. Right-hander Julio Reyes (1-0, 5.28 ERA) is slated to start when the series wraps up on Monday.
