Freedoms suffer first loss of season

It took a supertiebreaker to decide the Freedoms' match with the San Diego Aviators Monday night.

Unfortunately for the Freedoms, they came up just short, 22-21 at the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.

The Freedoms (1-1) entered the supertiebreaker tied with the Aviators (2-0), 21-21, and sent out Marcelo Melo and CoCo Vandeweghe for mixed doubles.

The pair fell, 7-5, to San Diego's Raven Klaasen and Darija Jurak.

Melo opened the match by falling in men's doubles alongside Robby Ginepri to Klaasen and Taylor Fritz, 5-2.

The Freedoms then took the next three sets, including a women's singles victory by Vandeweghe, a men's singles win from Ginepri and a women's doubles win from the pair of Taylor Townsend and Vandeweghe.

The Freedoms have yet another match in California at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday when they face the California Dream (1-1) in Citrus Heights, Calif.

The Dream earned their first victory of the season Monday, 28-13, over the Springfield Lasers.
