The best highlights from Saturday's action

The Penn Charter football team defeated nonleague opponent Lansdale Catholic, 20-6, in the season opener in Ocean City, N.J.

The Penn Charter football team defeated nonleague opponent Lansdale Catholic, 20-6, in the season opener in Ocean City, N.J.

Muhammad "Moe" Harris set up the Quakers' first touchdown when he recovered a fumble on Lansdale Catholic's 11-yard line. It took Penn Charter's offense just two plays for Edward Saydee to score on a 7-yard run.
Penn Charter's Terence Thompson blocked a punt in the second quarter, and Saydee found the end zone again on a 12-yard run. Gavin Tyghe scored the third touchdown in the third quarter on a 24-yard run.
Saydee had 24 carries for 194 yards. Lansdale Catholic accounted for all 16 passing yards.

In other nonleague action:

Jenkintown's defense held the lead in the final two minutes as it stopped a two-point conversion to account for a 20-18 victory over visitor Nativity BVM. Albert Koniers scored the first touchdown for Jenkintown, and Adam Giammanco and Patrick Morrin connected twice for passing scores. But Nativity's Ralph Muldrow scored on a pass from Ryan McDonald with 1 minute, 29 seconds left in the game to cut the lead to two points.

Cardinal O'Hara defeated host Mastbaum, 42-0, as Chris Kirby and Taseer Jones each scored two touchdowns. Justin Santilla scored a touchdown and forced a fumble on a kickoff for O'Hara. The fumble was recovered by Derrick Patrick Jr. Jalen Smith helped the Cardinals defense with an interception.

Girls’ soccer

Kristen Curley's hat trick led Neshaminy to a 5-0 road victory over West Chester Rustin in a nonleague game. Brooke Mullin and Emily Tantala each added a goal. Brianna Tobin, Michaela Boyd, Jackie Ziegler, and Genna Obringer each had assists. Victoria Smith remained perfect in net for the Redskins with four saves.

Boy’s Soccer

Lower Merion's Sebastian Connelly made four saves as the Aces defeated host Avon Grove, 2-0, in a nonleague game. Wyatt Joseph scored both goals for Lower Merion, while Cole Sanchez and Evan Goodman each had an assist.

Field hockey

Downingtown East opened up its season at home with a 7-0 nonleague win over Spring-Ford. Ava Irwin was perfect in net with five saves. Kayla Barr and Caroline Webb each scored two goals, and Kayla Webb also had an assist. Paige Wolfe scored one goal and had one assist, while Christian Golden and Rachel Swink each added a goal.

New Jersey highlights:

Sai'Mere Colon and Nate Kidd connected on three touchdowns in Gloucester's 37-0 victory over Maple Shade on Saturday.

Colon caught a fourth touchdown pass, from Kyle Burkhardt, and had a total of 171 yards in the first half to dominate the season opener.

Jack DeBenedictis' rushing touchdown and Henry Kain's 24-yard field goal rounded out the scoring for the Lions.

Gloucester will hit the road Friday to face West Jersey League Classic Division opponent Clayton. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Maple Shade will visit New Egypt Friday at 7 p.m.

Timber Creek traveled to play Belleville West in East St. Louis, Ill., and won, 35-21.

Michael Johnson ignited the Chargers with an 82-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to tie the score at 21-21 in the third quarter.

Tarheeb Still followed Johnson's effort with a 32-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Devin Leary. Leary, a North Carolina State recruit ranked the 25th best quarterback in the country and the eighth best player in the state by ESPN, finished with three touchdown passes.

Belleville's Kriston Davis had three touchdowns and was the only Maroon to score. With 1 minute, 42 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Kyle Dobbins ended the Timber Creek scoring by catching an 8-yard pass from Leary.

Timber Creek will return home to host Delsea on Friday at 7 p.m. It will be Delsea's first game.

The Crusaders are led by senior teammates and cousins Tom Maxwell, a lineman, and all-purpose player Mason Maxwell. The Crusaders finished 3-2 in the division last season.
