Saturday's Pa. roundup: St. Joseph's Prep rolls past Northeast for District 12 6A championship

St. Joseph's Prep decisively handled Northeast, 31-0, to win the District 12 Class 6A final on Saturday. An intentional grounding call in the endzone put the Hawks on the board in the first quarter.

Kolbe Burrell rushed for scores of 8 and 5 yards to give the Hawks a 15-point cushion at the half.

Dejuan Dandridge opened the second half with a 32-yard fumble recovery.

James Cherry added a 62-yard punt return later in the quarter.

St. Joseph's Prep added another safety in the final frame.

The Hawks continues its season against Parkland on Nov. 25.

Neumann Goretti 44, Schuykill Haven 7:

The Saints defeated the Hurricanes in the PIAA Class 2A first round behind behind Leddie Brown's three rushing touchdowns. Chris Wells added an 87-yard kickoff return in the first quarter and two touchdown runs of 50 and 63 yards. Rausheen Lively chipped in a 13-yard run. Neumann-Goretti will play undefeated Southern Columbia.

Field Hockey

Downingtown West's quest for a perfect season fell short in a 2-0 loss to Penn Manor in the Class 3A final. The Whippets finish the season 25-1. The Comets completed its season with a 26-0 record.

Girls' Soccer

Villa Joseph Marie fell to Moon 1-0 in the Class 3A final. This was the Jems' fourth straight state title appearance, losing its last three. It was the second year in a row Villa Maria lost to Moon.

"To make it here four times, there's nothing to be ashamed of," Jems' head coach Rich Finneyfrock said. "It's going to be a tough game, even when you win them. I'd like to win it for the girls, of course, but I'm just happy the girls got the chance."

The Jems' best scoring opportunity came in the second half off a headed corner kick that hit the post. Later in the game, a scramble ensued in the box, but a Moon defender cleared the ball before it crossed the line.

Villa Joseph Maria won't be plagued with as much turnover after losing 12 players from last year's team. They're expecting everyone back but four players for a run at a fifth title appearance next season.
