Bill Sytsma named new football coach at Frankford

Bill Sytsma has a head-coaching resume that spans continents. Now, he can add Large and Dyre Streets in the Frankford section of Philadelphia.

After four years as an assistant, Sytsma has been named Frankford High School’s football coach, after Dominic Doyle stepped down.

“I grew up in Frankford,” Sytsma said, “and, as a kid, Frankford High School in the ’80s and early ’90s was as big as it got in the neighborhood. I’m really excited to step into a program like this, and I can’t wait to get started.”

Junior running back Jordan Price, a big, bruising runner, should figure prominently for the Pioneers next season. Frankford finished 6-5 overall and lost to Mastery North in the Public League playoffs.

Sytsma, who played at North Catholic (1993 to 1995), was the Pioneers offensive coordinator last season, after three years as quarterbacks coach.

Before that, Sytsma spent nearly four years coaching professional football in Italy for the Bari Wild Boars and the Terni Steelers. The competition was comparable to collegiate Division III play.

Sytsma also spent three years as an assistant at now-closed North Catholic, including its last season in 2009. He also had a five-year run at Neumann-Goretti, serving two years as the varsity head coach (6-17 overall record).
