Pa. Boys: Fri. Pa. boys: Conestoga beats Cheltenham

Jake Bufo retired the last nine batters in order to finish a strong outing, and Conestoga knocked off host Cheltenham, 6-2, Friday in the District 1 Class AAAA baseball quarterfinals.

Bufo, a senior lefthander, allowed the North top seed just two hits. He gave up one earned run and struck out eight.

Steve Born went 2 for 4 with two RBIs, and his twin brother, Andrew, was 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Max Dolente went 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI for the South fourth seed.

Boyertown 1, Pennridge 0 - Brandon Griesemer pitched a four-hitter, and the North second seed edged the North sixth seed. Griesemer doubled to right field to lead off the second. Pinch-runner Jordan Shustack scored on a passed ball.

Phil Gilchrist hit a two-run single in the third inning, and Franklin Towne Charter cruised by Philadelphia Academy Charter, 10-2, at Ashburn Field. Gilchrist also scored twice and stole a base. Steve Callahan went five innings for the win, allowing six hits.

Washington 6, Masterman 2 - Ed Tingle went 2 for 3 and drove in a run to lead Washington past Masterman at Ashburn Field.

Joey Pena went 3 for 4, including a bases-clearing triple in the fifth inning, and Perkiomen School downed visiting Friends' Central, 8-3.

Haverford School 12, Shipley 0 - Tyler Dunbar allowed just a swinging-bunt single for the hosts. Conner Burke homered and drove in four runs. Kevin McGowan and James McConnon had three RBIs apiece.

Washington defensive tackle Zaire Hollerway has been named to the U.S. Under-19 National Team, which is selected by USA Football.

The team, composed of 44 players and coached by Aaron Brady of Malvern Prep, will compete in the International Federation of American Football world championships. The eight-team tournament will be held July 7-16 in Kuwait City.
