Methacton sophomore falls in state tennis final

Methacton's Mihaela Codreanu rallied in Saturday's semifinals to earn a spot in the PIAA Class AAA girls' tennis singles championship before finishing in second place.

The sophomore defeated Callie Frey of Mount Lebanon, 0-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6), in a semifinal and was the only area player to reach the state finals this season. Codreanu then dropped a 6-1, 6-4 match to Pine Richland's Marlys Bridgham.

Wissahickon's Maureen Devlin finished fourth.

In Class AAA doubles, Devlin's younger sister, Katherine, teamed with Christie Cesarini to beat Parkland's Jenna Peng and TuQuyen Pham, 6-3, 6-4, for third place after losing in the semifinals.

New Hope-Solebury's Genevieve Hobson fell in the Class AA singles semifinals before rebounding with a win in the third-place match. She topped Tyra Ott of Wilson, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

Final: Grace Reilly and Emily Johnson, Scranton Prep, def. Brittany McBride and Katie Elia, Mercyhurst Prep, 6-0, 6-1.

Third place: Carlee Brumgard and Jenna Glass, Biglerville, def. Mara Trifoi and Caroline Pattillo, Wyomissing, 6-3, 6-3.
