Fri. Pa. boys' roundup: Shipley sweeps FSL in lacrosse again

Shipley rallied behind the scoring of Mac Gallagher to complete its fourth straight undefeated league season, as the Gators edged visiting Academy of the New Church, 5-4, in overtime in the Friends Schools League lacrosse championship on Friday.

Gallagher scored the last three goals of the game unassisted to help Shipley overcome a 4-2 deficit. He scored the winner with 50 seconds left in the extra period. Goalie Ian McGibbon posted 13 saves for the victory.

Shipley has won 28 straight games in league play.

Colton Doering scored twice for Academy of the New Church, and Colin Rogers recorded 10 saves.

GAMP scored twice on a first-inning error and held on to top host Masterman, 2-1, in the Public League Class A championship.

Desmond Drummond and Tyler Criniti scored the early runs. Jacob Kurtz struck out 10 and walked two for the complete-game win.

The title is the Pioneers' seventh in the last eight years. Masterman topped GAMP in the 2011 final.

In the Class AA title game, Jamuel Cruz went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs to lead Esperanza over visiting Prep Charter, 10-7. Cruz hit a two-run double in the second inning, and Ralphy Ramos picked up the complete-game win and fanned seven.

Junior righthander Ray Guinther struck out eight over seven innings as Philadelphia Electrical held off visiting Swenson, 7-5, in the Class AAA final. Elliot Castillo drove in two runs. The Chargers won their first title in four years.

Bicentennial. Bristol ended a 15-2 regular season with a 9-8 triumph over visiting Lower Moreland. Derek Whitfield tripled in Mike Petrino with two outs in the eighth.

Nonleague. Demetrius Isaac went 3 for 3 with two RBIs and scored twice as Penn Charter topped visiting Springfield (Montco), 9-6.

Andrew Born was 2 for 2 and scored four runs as Conestoga raced past Cardinal O'Hara, 11-6.

Harriton and Conestoga posted wins and advanced to the semifinals of the PIAA Team Tournament at the Hershey Racquet Club.

Max Blumenthal won, 7-5, 1-6, 12-10, at first singles to lead Harriton past Lancaster Country Day, 5-0, in the Class AA quarterfinals. Griffin Kivitz and Matt Benstock teamed to rally at first doubles, 4-6, 6-3, 14-12.

Harriton advances to meet Wyoming Seminary in the semifinals at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The final will follow at 3 p.m.

In the AAA quarterfinals, Conestoga eased to a 5-0 win over Cedar Crest. Jason Sutker scored a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win at second singles, and Brian Grodecki earned a 6-0, 6-4 win at third singles.

Conestoga, the defending state champion, will face Mount Lebanon at noon Saturday in the semifinals.

Also in Class AAA, Pennsbury, Council Rock North, and Unionville fell by 3-2 scores in the quarterfinals.

Pennsbury's Charlie Rushing and Taylor Illes scored singles wins, but it wasn't enough as Erie Cathedral Prep prevailed.

Michael Furr and Johnny Wu won singles matches for Unionville in the Indians' loss to Shady Side Academy.
