Sat. Pa. boys' and girls' roundup: Roman stops Neumann-Goretti streak

Roman Catholic relied on the steady arm of a sophomore to hand Neumann-Goretti its first baseball loss against a Catholic League opponent in nearly two years, as the Cahillites won, 11-8, on Saturday.

Kyle Rogalski pitched the final three innings and posted his first varsity win. Matt Simon provided the offense with a pair of home runs, and Pablo Gambaro added three hits. The Cahillites jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and never trailed.

Neumann-Goretti, the defending league champion, had won 24 straight games against league opponents, last losing to Monsignor Bonner in the league semifinals in May 2010.

Friends Schools. Jonah Frey hit a two-run triple in the fifth inning, and Shipley overcame an early deficit to top visiting Friends Select, 4-2.

Gators coach Brian Bendowski picked up his 100th career win, improving to 100-47 in eight seasons. Vince Ceriale struck out seven and walked none in a complete-game effort for Shipley. Friends Select led 2-0 after 31/2 innings.

Friends' Central scored three times in the first inning and held on to blank visiting George School, 3-0.

Aaron Ross pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts and one walk. Senior rightfielder Dennis Whitely's single drove home a run, and the Phoenix scored their other two runs on an error.

Geoff Brisco fanned seven in seven innings to help Academy of the New Church edge visiting Moorestown Friends, 4-3. Senior first baseman Kirk Synnestvedt went 2 for 3 and scored a run in the third.

Nonleague. Steven Cohen went 3 for 5 with a pair of runs scored as Penn Charter eased past visiting Monsignor Bonner, 10-5. Freshman Gabe Smith posted the win with three strikeouts and three runs in six innings.

Softball

In a nonleague matchup of undefeated teams, Neshaminy remained unblemished as it topped visiting Nazareth Academy, 8-3.

Lauren Quense pitched seven innings for the Redskins (5-0) and fanned 13. Jen Walker slugged a deep homer to left field in the second inning to drop Nazareth to 7-1 this spring.

Owen J. Roberts' Maddie Galdi pitched five innings, allowing no runs and one hit, and also went 3 for 3 at the plate with two RBIs as the Wildcats topped visiting Pequea Valley, 9-2. Shannon Clemens added a single, double, triple, and four RBIs.

Lacrosse

Matt Rambo scored five times, but La Salle fell to St. Augustine (N.J.), 11-10, in the Checking for Cancer Tournament at Haverford School. Stephan Hudak and Adam Stefanowicz each had a goal and an assist for the Explorers against The Inquirer's No. 1 team in South Jersey.

Henry Blynn netted five goals and Jake Landman turned away eight shots as host Haverford School eased past Lawrenceville, 10-3. Gavin McBride chipped in with a pair of goals and one assist.

John Garino's 15 face-off wins helped Episcopal Academy control the pace en route to dropping Radnor, 12-6. Tyler Odell scored three goals for the Churchmen.

Ridge Schultz scored with 15 seconds left to lift Souderton at Marple Newtown, 9-8, in a nonleague game.

Girls. Kelly Cross scored four times and added two assists as Upper Dublin rolled at Boyertown, 12-7. Sarah Gallagher had 12 saves to seal the win. Rachel Engle and Amanda Smith scored twice each for Boyertown.

Iris Williamson scored six times, Annie Wilson added five goals, and Germantown Friends eased past Agnes Irwin, 17-6, in the Checking for Cancer Tournament at Haverford School. Lauren Shinn and Dana Schulman combined for nine saves.

Bonnie McShane's four goals and five assists led Merion Mercy past Downingtown East, 16-9.
