Sat. Pa. boys’ and girls’ roundup: Phoenixville prevails

The senior catcher is the grandson of Phillies' Hall of Fame outfielder Richie Ashburn. His RBI hit in the fifth broke a 2-2 deadlock, and the Phantoms added another run in the seventh.

Shane Allen added a triple for Phoenixville and Colin Ammond earned the win.

Nonleague. Sophomores Dominic Couci and John Scheffey combined for a five-inning no-hitter as LaSalle downed Shadyside Academy, 10-0, in Orlando. Couci struck out four and allowed one walk over the first three innings. Scheffey closed out the last two innings with three strikeouts.

P.J. Acierno and Ryan Otis combined to go five for six, score five runs, and knock in three more from the top two-spots of the Explorers' lineup.

Senior second baseman Drew Hayes slammed a three-run inside-the-park home run in the second inning to put Malvern Prep ahead en route to a 16-6 win over visiting Garnet Valley. John Durkee pitched two innings and struck out a pair to post the win.

Freshman Zach Wieglus pitched five innings, struck out six and yielded one run on four hits as Penn Charter outlasted visiting Lansdale Catholic, 3-2. T.J. Pagan had a two-run single in the first and Kenny Koplove drove in another on a sacrifice fly.

Manny Fernandez drove in a pair of runs and Asa James struck out 10 batters to lift host Boys' Latin over Del-Val Charter, 12-4. Fernandez, a freshman, finished 3 for 4 and scored twice.

Softball

Casey Tompson and Paige Giunta each recorded a pair of hits but Downingtown East fell to visiting Governor Mifflin, 8-4, in a nonleague contest. Thompson had a double and Giunta drove in a run.

Track and Field

Strath Haven and Penncrest each captured five first places at the Upper Darby Relays.

The Lions won four running events, including the girls' 4x800-meter relay in 9 minutes, 51.75 seconds, nearly 15 seconds better than second-place Germantown Friends. Strath Haven's Rachel Van Metre and Elizabeth Clarke won the girls' triple jump with a combined 66-foot, 1-inch effort.

Tevin Kirby and Chris Black of Hatboro-Horsham captured first places in the boys' shot put and discus.

Phoenixville Relays. Coatesville won the girls' 4x100, 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800 relays in the annual competition at Phoenixville.

The Red Raiders boys took gold medals in eight events.

Oxenreider Relays. North Penn and Methacton tied for the girls' team title at the Muhlenberg meet.

Chloe Johnson, Ally King, Lexi Wallace and Meghan McGovern captured the sprint medley relay for North Penn in 1:55.31. The Maidens won four relays on the track.

Boys' Lacrosse

Morgan Westby and Tyler Odell each scored a pair of goals, and Episcopal Academy rolled, 8-4, at St. Stephen's & St. Agnes (Va.). Dutch Buckley, Jon Garino and Curtis Zappala added a goal and assist apiece.

Shane Carr's hat trick and Jackson Tamasitas' 13 saves helped lift visiting Penn Charter over St. Anne's-Belfield (Va.), 9-5. Charles Giunta helped the Quakers control the pace with seven groundballs. Tyler Earley added three assists.

Michael Rama scored a pair of goals and assisted on two more, and Jack Deragon turned away 13 shots to lead Upper Dublin past visiting Avon Grove, 7-3.

Girls' Lacrosse

Garnet Valley relied on the play of its senior attacks to knock off visiting nonleague foe Archbishop Carroll, 16-8. Halley Barnes scored five goals and AnnaElise Morello scored three times and added four assists.

Senior goalie Kate Stroup turned away 11 shots and was aided by the defensive presence of junior Coley Ricci.
