Cheltenham beat Bangor in girls' basketball Class AAAA game

Trailing by 8 points with 23 seconds left in the first round of the PIAA State Class AAAA tournament at Easton, Cheltenham got 10 straight points from Andrews and escaped with an improbable 65-63 victory over District 11 champ Bangor.

Andrews, a senior guard headed to St. Joseph's in the fall, tied the game with 3 seconds to go on a three-point shot, and stole the inbounds pass and hit the winning layup as the buzzer sounded. She finished with 32 points, 6 rebounds and 6 steals.

Also in Class AAAA, Mount St. Joseph broke open a close game with a strong second half and disposed of Wilson, 43-30, at Governor Mifflin.

Sophomore guard Alex Louin had 10 points and 8 rebounds, Cailin Schmeer added 12 points and 4 steals, and Bridget Higgins chipped in with 11 points and 7 boards for Mount, which outscored Wilson by 26-15 after intermission.

Alex Wheatley deposited 10 of her 22 points in a 21-5 first-quarter surge and finished with 11 rebounds, sending Council Rock South past Pleasant Valley, 51-21, at Wissahickon.

Archbishop Carroll got four three-pointers each by Shannon Shields (13) and Rachel Pearson (16) in a 62-37 triumph over Haverford High at Father Judge.

Class AA. Engineering & Science rallied late to stun Lancaster Mennonite, 51-50, at Germantown. Yolanna Snypse's 16 points and Monique Whaley-Briggs' 15 powered the winners.

Boys' Basketball

Octorara outscored Lampeter-Strasburg by 13-5 in the second overtime period and escaped with an 83-75 first-round thriller in the PIAA Class AAA state tournament at Norristown.

James Brown had 17 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists, and DeQuan Norton scored 21 among four Braves in double figures.

Jeff Ainsley had 16 points, Tom Heston picked 11 boards and Jack Kalnes dished 5 assists for Holy Ghost Prep in a 58-48 win over Northeastern at Norristown.

Alec Stavetski made sure Archbishop Carroll started strong, tossing in 28 points, grabbing 9 rebounds and dishing 3 assists amid the Patriots' 63-40 win over Trinity at Milton Hershey.

Neumann-Goretti also won easily, 81-47, over Greencastle-Antrim at Archbishop Ryan. The Saints' balanced attack included John Davis' 14 rebounds and 21 points on 8-for-12 shooting, Derrick Stewart's 13 points, and Ja'Quan Newton's 13 points.

Class A. Church Farm followed Doolun Anyam's 14 points and Aondofa Anyam's 10 points to a 48-30 triumph over Old Forge at Plymouth Whitemarsh.

Constitution's 10th straight win was an 84-45 rout of Camp Hill at Southern, in which Savon Goodman scored 24 points and Tamir Bolger netted 10 in a 23-8 first quarter.

Math, Civics & Sciences advanced with a 75-59 success against Pius X at Easton, fueled by Quadir Welton's 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Jeffon Powell's 11 points and 9 boards.
