Thurs. Pa. boys' and girls' roundup: Pennsbury stuns Upper Perk

Pennsbury pulled off a 48-22 upset of host Upper Perkiomen on Thursday night in the second round of the PIAA District 1 Class AAA team wrestling tournament.

Held at four sites with six teams at each location, the first two rounds set up the matchups for the quarterfinals, to be held Feb. 3 at Upper Dublin.

Pennsbury (11-5), seeded 11th among the 24 teams, narrowly beat No. 22 seed Wissahickon, 34-32, in the first round before stunning the sixth-seeded Indians (11-9) in the second round. The Falcons will face Spring-Ford, a 53-12 winner over Garnet Valley, in the quarterfinals.

In other second-round action, fourth-seeded Marple Newtown outlasted No. 13 Glen Mills, 36-33, at West Chester Rustin and will face Rustin, a 49-16 winner over Upper Moreland, in the next round.

Council Rock North and Norristown are headed for a quarterfinal showdown after each won easily at Pottsgrove. North decked Downingtown East, 35-18, and Norristown pinned Downingtown West, 44-32.

In first-round action, Upper Darby dominated the lower weights, winning five straight from 106 pounds to 132 en route to a 38-19 win over West Chester East at Interboro. Anthony Petril (106) had a technical fall, and Long Le (120) added a pin.

Emily Wetz became the second player in Agnes Irwin history to reach 1,000 career points but visiting Notre Dame spoiled the occasion by beating the Owls, 54-33, in an Inter-Ac League matchup.

Kathleen Fitzpatrick's 12 points and Morgan Jennings' 11 topped nine Notre Dame scorers.

Wetz, the senior captain of the basketball and field hockey teams, needed 9 points for 1,000 and used a layup with 1 minute, 40 seconds left to reach the plateau.

"Scoring 1,000 points is a huge milestone for any high school player," Owls coach John Novarina said. "The fact that she is only Agnes Irwin's second 1,000-point scorer tells you how difficult an accomplishment this is."

Catholic Academies. St. Basil (11-6, 7-4) handed visiting Mount St. Joseph (16-2, 9-1), ranked No. 6 in Southeastern Pennsylvania by The Inquirer, its first league loss, 46-42, in overtime.

Kalee Fuegul's three-pointer at the buzzer forced OT, and the Panthers used solid foul shooting in the 8-4 extra period. Erin Fenningham led St. Basil with 14 points.

Villa Joseph Marie avenged an earlier 14-point loss to Nazareth Academy by beating the visiting Pandas, 59-45. Senior center Mary Newell gave the Jems 22 points and 15 rebounds.

Maura McKenna made all of her six foul shots in the fourth quarter and Caroline Shimrock finished with 20 points to help Gwynedd-Mercy hold off visiting Merion Mercy, 49-43.

Nonleague. Haley Sipple and Emily Gilhool each hit two foul shots in the last 40 seconds to help Chichester escape with a 41-40 win over visiting West Chester East.

Hakeem Baxter broke the Philadelphia Electrical school record for points in a game by depositing 29 in a 63-62 double-overtime Public League loss to visiting Vaux.

Synquel Cottman hit the game-winning three-pointer with 8.7 seconds remaining in the second extra period. Baxter, a junior point guard, broke the mark of 28 points shared by four players.

Junior swingman Kendale Truitt poured in a career-high 43 points, coming up six points short of the Washington school record for points in a game during an 85-75 win over visiting Dobbins. Truitt also had 10 rebounds and 8 assists.

Savon Goodman's third 40-point game of the season for Constitution aided a 66-45 triumph over visiting Southern. Goodman also had 16 rebounds and 6 steals, and Daiquan Walker chipped in with five threes.

Michael Bowlers tied the game with 4 seconds left in regulation and hit a pair of foul shots in overtime as Lincoln outlasted visiting Fels, 51-48. Bowlers finished with 21 points and 16 rebounds.

Freire Charter's Jahyde Gardiner piled up 22 points, 7 rebounds and 5 blocked shots, and scored eight fourth-quarter points to fuel a 54-49 comeback win over visiting Franklin Learning Center.

GAMP's 67-46 win over visiting High School of the Future featured Tobias Stokes' six three-point baskets, Desmond Drummond's 14 rebounds and Jeff Williford's 9 assists.

Math, Civics & Sciences rallied from five points down in the last period to beat host Prep Charter, 64-56, buoyed by Quentin Davis' 16 points and 7 rebounds, and Basil Thompson's 14 points and 7 boards.

Central. Jon McGill scored on a layup off a pass from Dan Stauber with 19 seconds left to give Ridley a 29-28 thriller over visiting Haverford High.

Suburban One. Pennsbury needed Shawn Pepper's two foul shots with 3.5 seconds to go to beat visiting Central Bucks South, 43-42.

Tri-County. West-Mont Christian guard Blake Bradshaw record 1,000 career points on a third-quarter foul shot during a 74-26 loss to visiting Phelps.

Del-Val. Glen Mills center Raheem Harvey notched a triple-double of 22 points, 22 rebounds and 10 blocked shots as the Bulls edged visiting Chichester, 60-54.

Montverde Tournament. Roman Catholic upended Imhotep Charter, 58-40, in the first round near Orlando. Rashann London had 12 points and 7 assists, and Britton Lee added 18 points and 4 steals for the Cahillites, while Imhotep's Brandon Austin collected 11 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 blocks.
