Sat. Pa. girls’ and boys’ roundup: McGovern sets course mark

McGovern took the lead with less than 200 meters left and finished in 18 minutes, 28 seconds. Strath Haven's Hannah Grossman was second in 18:30, and both runners were faster than the course record of 18:31 set by Class AA winner Angel Piccirillo of Homer Center an hour earlier.

District 1 runners accounted for six of the first seven places, and Pennsbury had four of the first eight finishers to take the team title.

Class AAA boys. North Penn and Cardinal O'Hara each posted 132 points to top the 24-team field, but the Knights, led by Jack Macauley's 11th-place finish, took the trophy when sixth-man Hunter Hill was 65th, 20 spots ahead of O'Hara's sixth runner as the tiebreaker. The tie for first was just the third since 1939.

Hatboro-Horsham's Conner Quinn, who placed third in the District 1 meet a week earlier, took the top spot in 16:03, Boyertown's Brett Kelly was third and O'Hara's Dan Savage fourth.

Class AA girls. St. Basil claimed the team trophy with 72 points, edging Elk Lake by three points. Megan McGarrity's sixth place led the Panthers, and West Catholic's Jazmin Booker was seventh.

Girls' Tennis

Plymouth Whitemarsh's Cristina Kaiser finished second in the Class AAA singles, and Lower Moreland's Arianne Polatnick and Taylor Hoffman were the runners-up in Class AA doubles for the area's best showing at the PIAA state championships at the Hershey Racquet Club.

Kaiser won her morning semifinal match in three sets, but was beaten in the final, 6-1, 6-2, by defending champion Ronit Yurovsky of Plum. West Chester Henderson's Erin Bowsher finished third.

Pennsbury's Sona Hussian and Katie Reilly won the Class AAA doubles consolation match to take third place.

Class AA. Polatnick and Hoffman dropped a 6-1, 6-3 championship match to Sewickley Academy's Logan Antill and Caroline Ross.Harriton's Rachel Benstock and Marni Blumenthal placed third. District 1 champion Hannah Drayton of Harriton dropped her semifinal match in three sets and finished fourth in the state singles.

Boys' Soccer

Hill School and Malvern Prep each won quarterfinal matches in the Pennsylvania Independent Schools tournament and will face each other in Tuesday's semifinals.

Hill knocked off visiting Episcopal Academy, 4-1, to stay unbeaten in 11 games. Hill was aided by Colten Habecker's two goals, Jamie Forrest's two assists and Ted Wolter's six saves in goal.

Malvern recorded a 4-0 shutout of visiting Penn Charter behind goalie Matt Greskoff. Andrew Cirino, Ian McLarney, Melvin Snoh and Josef Tingey added goals.

Field Hockey

Katie Kelly and Maddie Lesher provided the offense as Archbishop Carroll captured their second straight District 12 Class AAA title with a 4-1 win over Northeast at Germantown.

Both Kelly and Lesher scored twice each. A senior attacker, Lesher is the school's all-time scoring leader.

Pa. Independent Schools. Avery Safford scored two goals, including the 50th of her career, leading host Shipley to a 6-1 tournament quarterfinal win over Mercersburg Academy. Casey Sklow and Elizabeth Wilcox added two goals each as the Gators rallied from an early 1-0 deficit.

Girls' Soccer

Gina DiTaranto's penalty kick proved to be the difference as Strath Haven downed Owen J. Roberts, 1-0, in the District 1 Class AAA Third Place game at West Chester East.

The senior scored in the fourth minute of the game after her teammate Morgan Glassford was taken down in the box. Krissy Welsh needed just two saves to post the shutout.

Pa. Independent Schools. Lizzie Sullivan scored twice and Mary Edwards assisted on two goals as Hill School won its tournament quarterfinal, 3-0, over visiting Germantown Friends. Hill, with nine shutouts this fall, has won 12 straight games.

Girls' Volleyball

Upper Merion claimed the District 1 championship with a 25-22, 25-20, 25-16 victory over Downingtown East in the final at Spring-Ford.

In the opening match of the doubleheader, Strath Haven outlasted Avon Grove, 25-23, 25-17, 23-25, 26-24, for third place. All four teams advance to the state tournament.
