Fri. Pa. boys' roundup: Magaha captures district crown

Drew Magaha kept his distance from the pack and captured first place in the boys' District 1 Class AAA Cross-Country Championship Meet at Lehigh University on Friday.

Magaha, of Upper Moreland, finished the 3.1-mile course in 15 minutes, 19 seconds.

Ned Willig of Great Valley finished in second at 15:34, followed a second behind by Harriton's Max Norris.

West Chester Henderson easily captured the team title with 89 points, followed by Great Valley's 148.

The top five teams along with the top 25 individual finishers not from those teams advance to the Nov. 5 state championship in Hershey.

In the Class AA championship meet, Lower Moreland's Dan Alexander won the individual title. Alexander navigated the course in 16:28.

Team champion Lower Moreland is the lone AA team to advance to next Saturday's state championship meet, while the top five runners not on Lower Moreland also advance.

District 12. In a close finish, La Salle's Tom Coyle edged Cardinal O'Hara's Dan Savage to clinch the Class AAA individual title. Coyle finished the Belmont Plateau course in 16:02, two seconds ahead of Savage.

The Explorers finished in second in the team standings, with Cardinal O'Hara taking first with 33 points.

In the Class AA meet, Keaton Naff of Masterman raced to a first-place finish and helped the Blue Dragons clinch the team title.

The top two teams in both Class AAA and AA along with the top 10 runners in each class not from those teams qualify for the state meet.

Soccer

Malvern Prep scored twice in the first half and held on to edge host Episcopal Academy, 3-2, and clinch its first Inter-Ac League title since 2002.

Andrew Cirino scored twice for the Friars (8-0-1, league).

Also in the Inter-Ac, Penn Charter scored midway through the first half to upset host Haverford School, 1-0. Ray Vandergrift beat three defenders before scoring off an assist by Ted Foley. This was just the Fords second loss of the season.

Tri-County. Del-Val Friends and visiting Phelps played to a 2-2 tie as both teams clinched their division titles. A.J. Bishop scored twice for the visitors. The Dragons clinched the Eastern Division, and Phelps captured the Western.
