Mount falls in state field hockey semifinals

Mount St. Joseph's field hockey team had no shortage of opportunities on Wednesday in a 2-0 PIAA State Class AAA semifinal loss to Cocalico.

Mount St. Joseph's field hockey team had no shortage of opportunities on Wednesday in a 2-0 PIAA State Class AAA semifinal loss to Cocalico.

The Magic just could not solve the puzzle that was Cocalico goalie Haley Mitchell.

"We had double the shots and almost double the corners," Mount St. Joseph coach Lois Weber said.

The Magic outshot the Eagles (19-4), 15-7, and had a 12-7 advantage in corners, but the story in the game was the Temple-bound Mitchell, who turned away 16 shots.

Several of the saves were spectacular, athletic plays.

"She was very good," Weber said. "We put the ball on her and she made some really good saves."

At the other end of the field, Kat Matchett played well in goal for Mount St. Joseph, registering six saves. Courtney Ueberroth scored a first-half goal and Liza Morgan added an insurance goal in the second half.

Cocalico, the fifth seed from District 3, knocked off District 3 champion Hershey, 3-2, in the quarterfinals.

It was a successful year for the Magic, led by junior twins Brooke and Allie Sabia. Last year was the first year in seven seasons the Magic did not make the state playoffs.

They also were champions of the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies and the District 1 AAA runner-up.
