Sabia sisters lead Mount St. Joseph past Villa Maria twice

The Sabia twins from Mount St. Joseph have been double-trouble for opponents - and for no team more so than Athletic Association of Catholic Academies-rival Villa Maria Academy.

The Sabia twins from Mount St. Joseph have been double-trouble for opponents - and for no team more so than Athletic Association of Catholic Academies-rival Villa Maria Academy.

The 16-year old juniors were key factors in the Magic's two wins over the Hurricanes within nine days. The first one, a 3-2 Mount St. Joseph triumph, snapped Villa Maria's 17-game winning streak. The second, a 2-1 overtime victory, came in the AACA playoff championship game.

The Hurricanes won the first meeting between the two teams 1-0 back on Sept. 23.

Brooke Sabia and her sister Allie each scored a goal in the two recent wins against the Hurricanes.

"I think we were a little more prepared in the second game against Villa," said Brooke, a midfielder. "We did a better job of forcing them to go right against our [defensive] strength. We realized they were beatable. That helped us in the championship game."

"We did a better job of marking up," added Allie, a forward. Both have been starters since they were freshmen, having learned the game at Norwood Font Bonne Academy in Chestnut Hill.

ASked to compare their styles of play, the twins agreed they are different.

"I'm more of a helping person," said Brooke. "I do a lot of talking and I have good stick skills."

"I'm much more aggressive and I think I see the field very well," Allie noted. "We're both very quick."

The sisters are members of the Magic track team. They run the 100- and 400-meter events.

Variety of scores

North Penn's Liz Fedele found a variety of ways to score Wednesday when she hit the cage four times against Hatboro-Horsham. It was the first four-goal game of her high school career.

Fedele scored two goals off of offensive penalty corners, one off regular play and another off a penalty stroke as the Maidens closed out their regular season with a 6-0 win over Hatboro-Horsham.

"I guess I was just shooting effectively that day," said Fedele when asked about the four goals which uppped her total to 13 for the season. "Actually, Hatboro-Horsham held us for a while. It was 0-0 for quite some time before we scored."

Fedele got that first goal with four minutes, 33 seconds left in the first half.

"It was senior night and I wanted to go out with a bang," the Maidens 5-foot-10 midfielder added. "It was a good feeling. I've enjoyed playing with so many great girls over four years."

North Penn's season is certainly not over. The Maidens (13-3-2 overall) are seeded fifth in the District 1 Class AAA playoffs. They face 28th seed Chichester in an opening round game Monday.

Fords will take seed

Haverford quietly rolled to an 11-0 record in winning the Central League championship, The Fords finished the regular season with a 15-3 overall mark and a seventh seed in the District 1 Class AAA playoffs.

Coach Samantha Lloyd said her team was a little disappointed in the seed - the Fords were hoping for a little higher - but they'll take it.

"I was getting reports from the seeding meeting and when I heard the fourth seed (Mount St. Joseph) was taken I was hoping for fifth or sixth but we're happy with whatever," Lloyd said.

Two of the Fords' losses were by a total of three goals. They lost their opener to Merion Mercy Academy, 2-0, and bowed to Sacred Heart, 2-1, Sept. 25.

"Merion scored two goals in a minute against us and we missed a [penalty] stroke against Sacred Heart," Lloyd pointed out. "We set some great goals for ourselves and accomplished most of them.

"We made improvements game-to-game this season. Hopefully we can continue them in the playoffs."

The Fords lost 1-0 in overtime in the second round of the last two district playoffs. Obviously, they hope to improve on that. They face 26th seed Perkiomen Valley in their playoff opener Monday.
