Pa. Girls: Magic send 8 golfers to district play

Samantha Arena led a group of eight Mount St. Joseph golfers who qualified for the PIAA District 1 Class AA championships with solid performances in the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies qualifier on Monday.

Playing at the Spring Hollow Golf Club in Spring City, Arena shot a 2-over-par 72 to beat teammate Alise McNutt (77), who finished in second place.

Also qualifying from Mount St. Joseph were Nicole Mischler (82), Jenny Jenkins, Taylor Bair (89) and Liz Doyle (both 91), Mary Elizabeth Entwistle (94) and Jessica Malone (95).

The highest non-Mount St. Joseph's finisher was Nazareth Academy's Christina Applegate, whose 81 was good enough for third place.

The qualifier saw 25 entrants from six schools compete and 15 will advance to the district tournament to be held on Oct. 12 at the Gilbertsville Country Club.

Other qualifiers were Merion Mercy's Elizabeth Parker (90), Villa Joseph Marie's Genna Fulginiti (92), Villa Maria's Nicole Falasco (93) and the Gwynedd-Mercy trio of Katie Dunphy (94), Jamie Bumgardner (94) and Jenna Hopkins (96).

Field Hockey

North Penn, ranked No. 5, in The Inquirer's Top 10, scored three first-half goals and topped Central Bucks East, 4-1, in a Suburban One Continental League game. Elizabeth Fedele scored twice.

Soccer

Megan Tracewell had two goals for Garnet Valley in its 6-1 Central League win over visiting Upper Darby.

In other league games:

Emily Ford scored twice as host Haverford High topped Springfield (Delaware County), 3-2. Jill Root's goal gave the Fords a 3-1 lead.

Gina DiTaranto scored twice and freshman Kristen Miller scored her first varsity goal as Strath Haven won at Harriton, 3-0.

Patricia Neckowitz scored twice for Lower Merion in a 2-1 win over visiting Ridley.

Natalie Miller's hat trick powered Radnor to a 7-1 win at Marple Newtown.

Catholic. Leanna Ashcom scored a goal in each half for host Hallahan in a 3-0 win over Bishop McDevitt. C.J. Murphy also scored.

Ches-Mont. Host Bishop Shanahan rallied for three second-half goals in a 3-0 win over Sun Valley. Cori Leach, Molly McNally and Erin O'Malley scored.

Tri-County. Sarah Gordon scored 13 minutes into the second half to give Barrack Hebrew a 1-0 win at Woodlynde, spoiling a terrific effort by Woodlynde goalie Sarah Engman, who turned back 24 of the 25 shots she faced.

Nonleague. Abington remained unbeaten with a 5-0 win over visiting Norristown, getting a pair of goals each from Julie Gallagher and Sheila Longo.

Kristen Habbel's second-half goal gave Phoenixville a 1-0 win at Upper Moreland. Lisa Schandenbach got the assist.

Sarah Keeny scored the first two goals for Cheltenham in a 3-0 win at Truman.
