Rowing championships set for Sunday

More than 2,600 boys and girls from 60 high schools in the region, most from Southeastern Pennsylvania and South Jersey, will be competing in the Philadelphia Scholastic Rowing Association's annual championships Sunday on the Schuylkill.

The championships have become the largest one-day rowing event on the Schuylkill. There are 481 boats entered in the races. Qualifying trials will begin at 8 a.m., with the finals expected to start about 2 p.m.

"Our numbers have been growing," said Paul Horvat, president of the PSRA, which sponsors the Manny Flick-Horvat series of regattas as well as Sunday's championships. "It's become a very popular sport for high schools. In the past 15 years, the number of schools competing has probably doubled."

The beach is open - it hasn't closed since more than 1,100 munitions were cleared by last Memorial Day weekend.
