S. Jersey Girls: Wed. S.J. girls: Buena blanks Deptford

Top-seeded Buena rode the arms of Sam Fiocchi and Jenn Cimino to a 2-0 victory over visiting, No. 9 Deptford on Wednesday in a South Jersey Group 2 softball quarterfinal.

But Fiocchi, who struck out 11 in a two-hitter, was the only pitcher the Chiefs used.

Cimino showed off her arm in center field.

Cimino doubled a runner off first in the top of the seventh after making a running catch on a soft line drive with no outs. She doubled a runner off second after a similar catch in the previous inning and threw out a runner at third in the third.

Cimino also drew a walk, stole second, and scored to give Buena a 2-0 lead in the sixth.

Sara Todd struck out six in a four-hitter for Deptford.

Buena will host No. 8 Middle Township, which upset Sterling on Tuesday, in the semifinals.

Elsewhere in Group 2, Ashley Reynolds delivered a two-out RBI single in the top of the seventh, and No. 6 Haddon Heights held off No. 3 Cedar Creek, 7-3, at home.

Reynolds finished 2 for 2 with a run and an RBI, Natalie Hales went 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI, and Katie Pisani, Chelsea Thomas, and Ali Bastien each had three hits for the Garnets.

Haddon Heights will visit second-seeded Pemberton in the semifinals Tuesday. Pemberton beat No. 7 Barnegat, 11-3, in its quarterfinal.

C.J. Group 2 Softball Quarterfinals

Chrissy Dalton and Katie Schroeder combined on a one-hitter to propel No. 2 Bordentown past visiting, No. 10 Cinnaminson, 3-0.

Dalton struck out five and allowed one hit over 42/3 innings. Katie Schroeder struck out four and held Cinnaminson hitless over the final 21/3.

Carli Shaw went 3 for 4 with a run for the Scotties, who will play third-seeded Manasquan in the semifinals.

S.J. Non-Public B Softball First Round

Patti Sullivan came off the bench and produced a two-run single in the top of the seventh to give Doane Academy the lead for good, and the No. 10 Spartans held on and upset No. 7 Roselle Catholic, 11-9.

It was the first NJSIAA playoff win by a girls' team in school history.

Kelsey Doell struck out seven and Christie Okoye hit two doubles for Doane Academy, which will visit St. Joseph in the quarterfinals.

S.J. Group 1 Softball Quarterfinals

Alexis Barton hit an RBI single in the seventh inning to send host, No. 3 Gloucester to a 2-1 victory over No. 11 Penns Grove.

Gloucester will meet Audubon in the semifinals.

Audubon 7, Woodbury 2: Deanna Pineiro, Erica Lord, and Valerie Pineiro each scored two runs to help the No. 2 Green Wave get by visiting, No. 7 Woodbury. Deanna Pineiro finished 3 for 4, and Michele Arechavala hit a three-run single.

Lacrosse

The accolades keep coming in for Moorestown midfielder Marie McCool.

The senior, who will head to defending NCAA champion North Carolina next year, was named to the North's roster for the Under Armour all-American game, to be played on July 12 at Towson.

Moorestown, which is ranked No. 2 in the country by U.S. Lacrosse, will host Notre Dame in a South Jersey Group 3 semifinal Thursday.
