Thurs. S.J. girls' roundup: Gloucester Catholic surges to victory

Caitlyn Eltzholtz picked up her 100th career hit at an opportune time, singling and scoring in a five-run eighth inning that enabled Gloucester Catholic to finish off host Penns Grove, 10-5, on Thursday in Tri-County Conference softball.

Eltzholtz batted 3 for 5 and scored three times for the Rams, who managed just two runs over the first six innings.

Marissa Cappello pitched the final three innings to earn her third win of the week.

Burlington County. Hana McNally scored the tying run on Maggie Hemler's two-out single in the seventh inning, and raced home on a two-out wild pitch in the ninth to complete host Holy Cross' 8-7, come-from-behind win over Cinnaminson.

Colonial. Chelsea Thomas and Mattie McCleery combined for four hits and three runs, and Shayla Sweeney struck out 12 in tossing a two-hitter as host Haddon Heights held off West Deptford, 3-1.

Olympic. Shelby Rohrer's two-out, two-run single in the sixth inning lifted host Cherokee over Winslow Township, 2-0. Tricia Griffin shut out the Eagles despite yielding three hits and nine walks.

Cape-Atlantic. Rosie LaGrotta pitched a three-hitter in improving to 15-4, and Lindsay Dwyer keyed the Sacred Heart offense with three RBIs in an 11-1 home rout of Our Lady of Mercy.

Burlington County League Tournament. Brittany Granahan scattered four hits over seven innings and batted 2 for 3 with one run scored, helping third-seeded Maple Shade oust No. 6 seed Burlington City, 2-1.

Ocean County Tournament. Krysta Plummer's sacrifice fly tied the game, Michaela Meleg followed with the go-ahead single in New Egypt's two-run fourth inning, and Alison Martino made the lead stand up as the host Warriors edged Pinelands, 2-1.

Track and Field

Middle Township's Yvonne Wolef became the first athlete in the history of the Cape May County Championships to finish her career with 15 first-place medals.

Wolef won the 100 and 200 meters and long jump for the fourth consecutive year, and the triple jump for the third straight year.

Lacrosse

Shannon Nugent deposited four of her five goals in the first half, enabling Shawnee to jump in front early en route to a 15-9 victory at Washington Township in an Olympic Conference interdivision match.

Caroline Shinske recorded a hat trick, and Jill Chiachetti, Keri White and Nicole Troost added two goals apiece for the Renegades. Megan Tiernan led the Minutemaids attack with five goals.

Nonleague. Sarah Ritter (4 goals, 3 assists) and Chelsea McDowell (3 goals, 2 assists) handled the playmaking chores, and Carleigh MacWilliams filled the role of finisher with five goals, as Cinnaminson cruised to an 18-9 win at Moorestown Friends.

The host Foxes were paced by Noelle Smith (5 goals) and Alea Couch (12 saves).
