Camden ends baseball slide with win over LEAP

Jose Rivas pitched five strong innings in relief and helped Camden High's baseball team snap a 36-game losing skid over three years with a 9-4 victory over LEAP Academy on Sunday in the Camden County Tournament at Campbell's Field.

The Panthers, who last won in the final game of the 2009 season against Woodrow Wilson, fell behind by 3-1 before Richard Jaquez delivered a three-run single in the third inning to put Camden ahead for good.

Kelvin Davis added two hits, and Rivas struck out seven in relief.

Gloucester Catholic handed New Egypt its first loss of the season, 13-1, in the championship game of the Rancocas Valley Elite Tournament.

Tournament MVP Abby Merryman threw a 7-0 shutout against Washington Township in the semifinals before stifling the Warriors in the title game.

The Rams' Maria Petrongolo went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and two RBIs, and Angela Antonini and Carly Todd each had two hits and drove in a run.

New Egypt reached the final with a 16-0 shutout of St. Joseph in which pitcher Alyson Martino had a two-run triple and a grand slam.

Battle of the Conferences. Rachel Gavigan homered and Lindsay Dwyer handled the pitching for Sacred Heart, which claimed the tournament championship at Overbrook with an 11-8 triumph over Paul VI.
