Haddon Heights fund honors late George Gans

Haddon Heights is establishing a scholarship fund in memory of George Gans Sr., who was one of the great supporters of the program.

Gans died in November, losing his battle with leukemia, and he is the inspiration for the first George Gans Sr. Alumni Soccer Game.

It will be staged at 1 p.m. May 21 at the Haddon Heights High football field. All proceeds from the game will go toward the George Gans Sr. Scholarship Fund. The plan is to give scholarship money to one of the seniors of the boys' soccer team at graduation.

"It's a great cause to honor a great man," said Haddon Heights coach Jeff Eppright, who guided the Garnets to the South Jersey Group 2 championship this past season.

That team was led by Gans' son, George Jr., an Inquirer first-team all-South Jersey forward and a graduating senior.

The soccer program hopes to make this an event that the entire soccer community of Haddon Heights can enjoy.

"All alumni and players of Haddon Heights High School are encouraged to come play or support on the sidelines," said Haddon Heights assistant coach and former player Lou Dollarton.

"All neighbors and community members are more than welcome to BBQ and socialize and watch all the great talent Haddon Heights has produced over the years, with DI, DII and DIII level."
