Thurs. S.J. girls’ roundup: Delsea downs Kingsway

Kingsway's quest for the Tri-County Conference Royal Division softball title encountered another roadblock on Thursday, when The Inquirer's top-ranked team suffered its second consecutive loss, 5-1, at Delsea.

Winning pitcher Jayme Zeilman held the Dragons (16-3 overall, 6-2 division) to a pair of singles, and helped herself at the plate by totaling two hits, two runs and one RBI.

Delsea (6-5, 3-3) rang up nine hits on the day, with Shilah Snead driving in two runs with a single and a pair of doubles, and Kayla Rohm going 2 for 3 and scoring twice.

Kingsway - which doubled up Delsea, 8-4, on April 6 - was coming off a 6-2 setback at Cumberland on Tuesday.

Danielle St. John's two-run single keyed a three-run sixth inning, lifting host Clearview over Highland, 4-1.

Kassidy White picked up three RBIs on a triple and two singles, providing more than enough support for pitcher Brooke Coleman in Pennsville's 8-2 triumph over visiting Salem.

Burlington County. Taylor Steele hit a batter with a pitch in the third inning - the lone blemish on her 15-strikeout no-hitter - and first baseman Tara Mason turned in a defensive gem in the seventh, as host Holy Cross handcuffed Willingboro, 3-0.

Emily Bausher fanned 15 in blanking Cinnaminson on two hits, and the senior doubled three times in going 4 for 5 with two RBIs and two runs, as New Egypt cruised to a 9-0 road win.

Nailah Smith's two-run single in the fifth put Westampton Tech ahead to stay in a 4-1 win at Palmyra.

Taylor Schuck stroked her fifth triple in four games and Nicole Cavalier plated three runs with a bases-loaded double in the second inning, putting host Burlington City on track for a 13-3 rout of Medford Tech.

Dara Schroeder had three hits and scored twice for host Northern Burlington, which pushed across three runs late to upend Burlington Township, 4-2.

Courtney McGonigle, who struck out 11 in pitching a one-hit shutout, joined three teammates in getting two hits apiece in Maple Shade's 11-0 home win over Trenton Catholic.

Olympic. Caitlin Somers drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh, bringing home Alyssa Garcia to complete host Cherry Hill West's 3-2 come-from-behind win over Paul VI. West rallied for two runs in the sixth, when Somers raced home on a bases-loaded wild pitch and Jessica Tadley scored on a sacrifice fly by Alicia DeFalvis.

Kylie Mulholland batted 4 for 4, drove in one run and scored three times, and Kristen Turner went 3 for 3 with two runs and three RBIs in powering host Washington Township past Lenape, 10-0. Alissa Schoelkopf struck out eight, walked one and limited Lenape to three hits in avenging a 10-6 loss to the Indians on April 11.

Laura Messina picked up two hits and one RBI while tossing a three-hit shutout, keying Camden Catholic's 4-0 victory at Cherokee.

Jackie Pezzato drove in a pair of runs in the third inning and made the lead stand up by hurling a four-hit shutout, as host Shawnee slipped past Triton, 2-0.

Bri Sandone scored in the second inning - on the first of Macie McGeehan's two doubles - and Alex Pecora limited Seneca to four hits in pitching host Bishop Eustace to a 1-0 victory.

Colonial. Shayla Sweeney lost her no-hit bid in the sixth inning, but wound up striking out 13 while allowing a single and two walks in Haddon Heights' 8-0 win at Woodbury. Chelsea Thomas and Mattie McCleerey combined for five hits, three RBIs and two runs scored for the Garnets, and Kristin Ulrich raced around the bases for an inside-the-park home run.

Taylor Pfettscher and Gianna Pedone teamed up to bat 6 for 7 with four RBIs, and host Haddon Township used a pair of five-run rallies to pound out a 10-1 win over Paulsboro.

Cape-Atlantic. Kelly Lupton struck out 15 while scattering three hits and three walks, and Kristy Kelly knocked in three runs to lead host Absegami over Mainland, 5-1.

Rachel Gavigan drove in four runs with three hits, including a three-run home run that broke the game open in the fifth, sending Sacred Heart to a 6-1 home win over Holy Spirit.

Brittany Scott fanned 10 and walked one in pitching a no-hitter, and Karlie Gruccio (3 for 3, 3 RBIs, 3 runs) and Gina Rice (3 for 3, 3 RBIs, 2 runs) had the hot bats for host Buena in a 17-0 romp past Bridgeton.

Corie Collins batted 3 for 4 with three RBIs and five other Millville players added two hits apiece, as the host Thunderbolts shocked Ocean City, 8-1.

Melissa Arthur scored five times and set up three goals, and six Cherokee players contributed two goals apiece, as the Chiefs claimed an 18-11 win at Cherry Hill West in the Olympic Conference.
