In a move likely to make a major impact on two sports next school year, football and wrestling star Greg Webb has transferred from Paul VI to Timber Creek.
The 6-foot-2, 280-pound Webb, a sophomore, will join a Timber Creek wrestling team that was No. 1 in South Jersey last season and should be among the top teams in the state in 2011-12.
Webb was an Inquirer first-team All-South Jersey wrestler as a heavyweight this winter. He went 32-3 and finished eighth in the state.
But Webb's college sport might be football. He was a first-team All-Olympic Conference selection as a defensive lineman as a sophomore, when he made 54 tackles with 5.5 sacks.
Timber Creek football coach Ron Hinson said Tuesday he expects Webb to be highly recruited as a defensive tackle.
"He's a monster inside," Hinson said. "Nobody can block him one-on-one."
Webb could be another major-college player to emerge from Timber Creek. Senior linebacker Quinton Alston has signed with Iowa, and senior all-purpose player Damiere Byrd has signed with South Carolina.
Timber Creek junior linebacker Quanzell Lambert is one of the state's most highly recruited players.
Lambert, an inside linebacker who likely will line up behind Webb for the Chargers next season, has offers from Alabama as well as Penn State, Iowa, Pittsburgh, Nebraska, Rutgers, and several other schools.
Hinson said the 6-2, 240-pound Lambert is not ready to commit to any college.
