Spector wins 100th in Region 8 quarterfinals

EGG HARBOR TWP., N.J. – Drew Spector will always remember his 100th career victory.

But he'd really like to remember his 101st and 102d, too.

Spector, a senior 140-pounder from West Deptford, scored his 100th victory with a quick pin Friday night in the Region 8 wrestling quarterfinals at Egg Harbor Township High School.

Spector, the No. 1 seed, improved his record to 30-2 and advanced to Saturday morning's semifinals with an eye toward winning his first region title Saturday night.

The top three finishers at each weight class Saturday will advance to the state championships March 4-6 at Atlantic City.

"It was nice to get 100, but the big thing was to advance," said Spector, who will face Timber Creek's Bryce Shade in the semifinals. "I want to get to Atlantic City."

Timber Creek and Paulsboro, the Nos. 1 and 2 teams in The Inquirer's final Top 10, each advanced five wrestlers to the semifinals.

Timber Creek advanced top seeds Ricky Carter (112), Brandon Keller (125), and Robert Shade (152) as well as No. 3 seed Kevin Birmingham (135) and No. 5 Bryce Shade (140).

Paulsboro advanced top seeds Anthony Dawson (160), Matt Cosgrove (171), and Nick Curl (285), as well as No. 2 seeds John Gentile (103) and Eric McMullen (189).

Washington Township's top-seeded Chalie Huff, who is trying to become his school's first three-time region champion, advanced with an 11-6 victory over West Deptford's Josh Gilliano at 130 pounds.

"I'm definitely the favorite, but it won't mean anything if I don't wrestle like it," said Huff, who won region titles in 2009 and 2010. "My coach told me two years ago after I won the regions as a sophomore that I could become the first from the school to win three. Now I have the chance to do it, but I have to wrestle my best."

Two seventh seeds upset second seeds. Pennsville's Colton Newsome beat Absegami's Nate Ross at 140 pounds, and Ocean City's Dan Pettit surprised Clearview's George Skibinski at 145.

Delsea freshman Bryan Dobzanski, the No. 6 seed, beat Timber Creek's Bryheim Muse, the third seed, at 189.

Deptford senior Paul Bachman was another sixth seed who sprung an upset. Bachman, the District 29 champion, scored an impressive 12-4 victory over Timber Creek's third-seeded Dom Ruggierrio at 130 pounds.

"I was able to counter everything he did," said Bachman, who will face Delsea's undefeated senior, Matt Hennelly, in the semifinals. "I like being the underdog. Nobody expects me to do it, and that makes it even better."

Spector, who also won the District 29 title, used a cradle to pin Paulsboro's Mike Silvestro in 1 minute, 30 seconds.

"I've been hitting cradles pretty much all year," Spector said.
