Winslow Township’s Belton picks Penn State

Bill Belton, The Inquirer's South Jersey offensive football player of the year from Winslow Township High in Camden County, has made an oral commitment to Penn State.

Belton said he made the choice on Monday night after meeting with Penn State assistant coach Mike McQueary.

"I had a good relationship with Coach McQueary and he came in for a home visit and hit it off with me and my parents," Belton said. "It's a great football program and a great school."

Belton originally committed to Pitt in the summer, but when Dave Wannstedt was forced to resign as coach, he Belton reopened his recruiting. He narrowed his choices to Penn State, West Virginia and Cincinnati.

Even though he played quarterback and defensive back at Winslow Township, the 5-foot-10, 180-pound Belton was recruited as a wide receiver.

He also said Penn State had some Wildcat packages for him to take some snaps.

Belton completed 148 of 241 passes for 2,167 yards and 21 touchdowns this season. He also rushed for 1,003 yards and 13 touchdowns on 161 carries. As a defensive back, he recorded five interceptions.
