Sat. S.J. boys’ and girls’ roundup: C.H. East tops Shawnee

Chris Santo scored nine points down the stretch, and Marc Schlessel nailed the go-ahead three-pointer with three minutes to go, sending host Cherry Hill East to a 58-53 win over Shawnee on Saturday in Olympic Conference boys' basketball.

Along with his game-high 29 points, Santo produced 10 rebounds and four steals. Schlessel finished with 11 points, and Jake Gurkin blocked five shots for the Cougars.

Shawnee received 15 points from Matt Chiusano and 10 apiece from Joe Bodnar and Ryan Bodnar.

Also in the Olympic Conference:

Dexter Harris and Carson Puriefoy combined for 21 points as host Bishop Eustace took control early in cruising past Cherry Hill West, 52-32.

Garrett Kashmer knocked down five shots from beyond the arc in scoring 17 to lead host Camden Catholic over Washington Township, 46-41.

Host Eastern slammed Seneca, 56-22, behind the scoring of sophomore center Avery Walker (13 points) and junior guard Mike Wilson (11).

Jordan Williams had 14 points, Kyle Johnson scored 12 and Pennsauken used a 15-0 third-quarter spree in rallying for a 57-47 win at Camden.

Trenton vs. Philly Tournament. Brandon Taylor (14 points) and Ronnie Paden (10) helped host Trenton Catholic build a 29-27 halftime lead, but the Iron Mikes couldn't keep pace in the second half in falling, 59-48, to Abington Friends.

Burlington County. Adam Schmidt picked up six of his 16 points in the fourth quarter, enabling Florence to finish off host Holy Cross, 47-36.

Danny Rodriguez led Burlington Township's balanced attack with 14 points, as the host Falcons soared past Northern Burlington, 59-41.

Tri-County. Junior center Ryan Schoppy established a career high with 24 points, including 17 in a 26-5 third-quarter blitz that propelled host Gloucester Catholic past Cumberland, 69-43. The Colts wasted a 23-point effort by Jeron Hadden.

Cape-Atlantic. Daulton Sterling (18 points) stole the ball with nine seconds left and drove the length of the court for a layup at the final buzzer, allowing Vineland to escape with a 53-51 win at Egg Harbor Township. The Clan was also helped by Marc Snead's 16 points, while Justin Williams (16 points) keyed a second-half comeback by the Eagles.

Jate Chesul (21 points) and Asmar Williams (19) provided an unstoppable one-two punch for host Holy Spirit, which bounced Buena, 86-48.

Monmouth University Tournament. Desmond Hubert turned in a solid effort in the low post with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and four blocks, but it wasn't enough to keep New Egypt from falling, 42-37, to Jackson Memorial.

Nonleague. The tandem of Michael Pitts (22 points) and Brandon Joyner (21) proved too tough for Pennsauken Tech to handle, as host Haddon Heights rolled to a 68-49 victory.

Woodrow Wilson's Xavier Robinson outscored Gardell Anderson of Camden Academy Charter, 35-20, in leading the Tigers to a 59-42 road win.

Wyatt Polk torched the Delsea defense for 31 points, and three other Bulldog scorers reached double figures as visiting Haddonfield cruised, 79-47.

James Bullock got off to a fast start, scoring seven of his 22 points in the first quarter, and host Overbrook followed suit in hammering Hammonton, 73-49. Tyler D'Amelio had 21 points for the Blue Devils, who fell behind by 24 in the first half.

Shaquille Butler knocked down three shots from beyond the arc in scoring 29 points for Burlington City, which used a 26-6 game-ending spree to bury host Bridgeton, 64-47.

Curtis Hopkins led the way with 18 points and eight rebounds in host Williamstown's 51-33 win over Timber Creek.

Stefano Okoro (16 points), Tajee Almon (15) and Michael Gorman (12) had the hot hands for Gloucester, as the host Lions mauled St. Joseph, 62-46.

Nicole Angelo drained a pair of three-point baskets in scoring 15, Addy Crenny added 12 points, and Camden Catholic took the lead for good with four minutes remaining in pulling away from host Haddonfield, 41-33, in a key nonleague clash.

Erin Brogan (13 points) and Grace Bealor (12) led the Bulldogs, who overcame a scoreless first quarter to pull even with the Irish, 24-24, entering the final period.

In other nonleague action:

Heather Juhring came through with six rebounds and two steals and joined Taylor Johnson and Liz Faulkner in scoring 11 points apiece, as host Kingsway turned back West Deptford, 50-38. Megan Kirschling had 14 points for the Eagles, who were unable to recover from a slow start.

Two days after committing to play at Montclair State, 6-foot senior Sara Farrell scored a game-high 16 points in helping host Cherokee edge Neumann-Goretti, 43-39. Krystine Rice chipped in 13 points for the Chiefs, who trailed by one entering the final period.

Eboni Reid capped her 19-point effort by sinking a pair of free throws with 18 seconds to go, helping host Overbrook outlast Hammonton, 35-34. Alexis Sondrini scored 14 for the Blue Devils, who missed a buzzer-beating shot at their first win of the season.

Joyce Perry and Victoria Wright combined for 22 points as host Schalick slipped by Audubon, 38-35. Sarah Cox and Devon Coyle had 10 points each for the Green Wave.

Burlington County. Drina Thornton (15 points, 13 rebounds) scored off an outlet pass from Jackie Laurenti (14 points) with 2 seconds remaining, making host Northern Burlington a 45-43 winner over Burlington Township. Marissa Rivera added eight points and 14 rebounds for the Greyhounds, while Amanda Bal (14 points) and Alicia Bradley (12) paced Township's attack.

Freshman point guard Alliya Butts set a career high with 16 points to go with seven steals and three assists, and Holy Cross got 10 points apiece from Ashli Jeune and Kim Ochman in rolling to a 54-38 win at Florence.

Olympic. Darby Sesta came off the bench to score 13 points and Lillian Chukwueze and Michelle Onu added 10 points each, as Cherry Hill East improved to 10-0 with a 59-49 triumph at Shawnee. The Renegades fell despite 23 points by Ein Molina.

Brianna Wylie posted a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Moira Anthony contributed 16 points and four steals for host Lenape, which ran out to a 21-5 lead in pounding Paul VI, 50-32. Carla Chmielewski's 13 points led the Eagles.

Vanessa Neal poured in 23 points and came up with nine steals, and Lati Stafford totaled 14 points and 10 rebounds in powering host Pennsauken past Camden, 49-26. Fianee Blackson supplied almost all the scoring for the Panthers, finishing with 19 points.

Hope Phillips had 20 points, and Bishop Eustace used a 34-15 run over the second and third quarters to pull away to a 57-47 victory at Cherry Hill West. The Lions made a late charge behind the scoring of Lisa Kosteleski (15 points), Taylor Klevenz (14) and Yazlane Villegas (11).

Miles Schoedler ran the 1,600-meter anchor leg in 4 minutes, 17 seconds, providing a blistering finish to Ocean City's victory in the Group 3 boys' distance medley at the NJSIAA state relay championships in Toms River.

Ocean City finished second in the Group 3 boys' team scoring to Oakcrest, which claimed the title by winning the shuttle hurdles and finishing runner-up in the 4x200, 4x400, sprint medley, high jump, and pole vault events.

Winslow Township captured the Group 3 girls' crown, highlighted by wins in the shuttle hurdles and 4x200.
