Williamstown’s rushing trio paces 30-14 triumph over Moorestown

Some teams have a top running back.

Some teams have a top running back.

Others have a 1-2 punch.

Williamstown displayed its triple threat Saturday against Moorestown.

The Braves' three running backs combined for 448 rushing yards on 47 carries in a 30-14 victory over the host Quakers in a West Jersey Football League interdivision game.

"We tried everything and everybody," Moorestown coach Russ Horton said of the Quakers' run defense. "They have three tough, hard-running backs."

Seniors Harry Ulmer, Karl Johnson, and Khalil Faison led the way for Williamstown (3-0), ranked No. 9 in South Jersey by The Inquirer.

Ulmer carried 14 times for 166 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown. Johnson carried 19 times for 156 yards and two touchdowns. Faison carried 14 times for 125 yards, and also scored on a 28-yard reception.

"The holes were huge," Ulmer said, crediting the work of Williamstown's offensive line. "The line made it easy on us backs."

Junior quarterback Andrew Lisa was 18 for 30 for 180 yards and a touchdown, while junior Delaney Wallace ran for 54 yards and a touchdown for No. 10 Moorestown (2-2).

"Our defense played amazing," said Williamstown two-way lineman Vince Kowalski, who has committed to Villanova. "Moorestown is a great team. They've been scoring 30 against everybody."

Williamstown broke the game open late in the second quarter as Ulmer snapped a 7-7 tie by bursting around right end and racing 75 yards for a touchdown.

Williamstown's Zak Komer recovered a fumble on Moorestown's next possession. The Braves went 58 yards in just three plays. Quarterback Dan Collins hit wide receiver Cody Miller for 27 yards, and Johnson scored from 31 yards out on a perfectly executed draw play.

"We knew they were a high-scoring team, so we had to score on offense," Ulmer said.

The Braves made it 27-7 midway through the third quarter when Johnson capped a six-play, 52-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown run.

"Williamstown is a very good team," Horton said. "They have bigger size than us, bigger numbers. They deserved to win."

After the game, Williamstown's coaches and players turned their attention to Friday night's home showdown with No. 1 Cherokee, the team that knocked the Braves out of the Group 4 state tournament last November.

"We've marked that game on our calendar since day one," Ulmer said.
