S.J. Girls’ Soccer Note

The Haddonfield girls' soccer team has nine new starters from a 23-1-1 unit that won the Group 2 state title, but the Bulldogs don't consider this a rebuilding year.

A key will be finding players who can score, which is why Saturday's 3-1 victory over Kingsway was encouraging. Two first-year varsity players supplied the goals. Junior Laurel Falana had two, and sophomore Gabby Ciemny scored the other.

Falana is a forward, and Ciemny is a defender. Ciemny scored by pushing up from the back.

"The two of them train and practice so hard, and those goals were a reward for the hard work both have put in," Haddonfield coach Glenn Gess said.

Gess also has had to make major defensive adjustments.

For the second year in a row, Haddonfield senior Lindsay Brophy has moved from outside back to goalkeeper because of an injury. Starter Kellie Riley suffered a broken collarbone in a scrimmage, and Gess estimates that she could be out for six weeks.

"Lindsay is such a great team player and said she would do whatever we needed," Gess said. "A player like that is invaluable."
