Ridley gets by Garnet Valley, 28-20

While it's still a work in progress, Ridley's new triple-option scheme is making significant progress. The visiting Green Raiders netted 290 yards rushing on 56 attempts while beating Garnet Valley, 28-20, Friday night in a Central League showdown at packed Moe DeFrank Stadium.

First-year Ridley boss Dave Wood, formerly an assistant at Penn and head coach at Widener, changed the team's offensive style.

"We found some things in the run game against Garnet Valley," he said. "It was big for us to control the ball, keep the clock moving, and keep the ball away from them as much as possible."

Brock Anderson led the way with 122 yards rushing on 17 attempts. The 6-foot-1, 170-pound senior broke free for a 61-yard score midway through the first quarter.

The Green Raiders (3-0 overall, 2-0 Central League) also had ground success when turning to Malik Young, Ociele Miller, Tahj McCafferty, and quarterback Cade Stratton.

Stratton's second rushing score of the night, a 1-yard sneak, made it 28-20 with just less than 2 minutes to play. Anderson and Ryan Gricco made late interceptions to seal the road victory.

Ridley's gritty offensive line was made up of center Zach Wagner, guards Christian Weber and John Sheldon, tackles Leo Teti-Cassidy and Jack Hutt, and ends Gregg Kimmel and Shane Dougherty.

Garnet Valley (2-1, 1-1) put the Green Raiders on their heels when Danny Guy returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a score.

Down by 14-7, Ridley evened things just before intermission on Stratton's 13-yard, left-side run.

The Jaguars went in front, 20-14, on Jacob Buttermore's 73-yard, third-quarter punt return. But the visitors immediately answered - and went in front - on Young's 34-yard, halfback-option toss to wideout Allen Martin.

A Ridley defense that held Buttermore and company to 83 yards rushing was led by Gricco and fellow linebackers Kimmel, Sean Crowley and Patrick McClintock.
