Daily News Public League playoff preview

Expect plenty of intense competition in the upcoming Public League season.

DISTRAUGHT over the playoff-less plight of your professional sports teams? Don't fret, Philadelphia.

There are always playoffs in high school sports! And this season, Public League basketball should offer some intense competition.

Plenty of regular-season action remains, but defending Pub champ Martin Luther King is off to a strong start behind returning guards Sammy Foreman and Jabri McCall, with 6-8 Roxborough transfer Tyere Marshall patrolling the middle.

Constitution, Pub runner-up and defending Class AA state champ, returns with a talented group, most of whom have played together since freshman year.

Led by seniors Ahmad "J.R." Gilbert (George Mason, forward) and Kimar Williams (guard), the Generals (now Class A) look to avenge a 46-44 loss to King after a Gilbert three at the buzzer fell just short.

Also in the Pub's Division A mix will be Imhotep (Class AAA), Math, Civics and Sciences (A), Philadelphia Electrical & Technology Charters (AAA) and Del-Val (AAA), all charter schools.

It appears we'll have an up-for-grabs situation in AA play.

Boys' Latin (AAA) is off and running in Division B, but also watch out for George Washington (AAAA). The Eagles are led by talented 6-6 wing Charles Brown, who will get help from Northeast transfer guard Elmange Watson among others.

There are 60 teams this season, and the new coaches are: Lou Williams (Murrell Dobbins), Leigh Pesko (Olney), Troy Holiday (Southern), Rendell Ivory (Overbrook), Shon Wright (Mariana Bracetti), Joe Gifford (Edison), Greg Green (Penn Treaty), Shawn Beckett (Parkway Northwest) and Sean Riley (Tacony Academy).
