La Salle swim team three-peats

The La Salle swimming team extended its dynasty Thursday at the PIAA swimming and diving championships. The Explorers cruised to another Class AAA state title at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa.

Buoyed by two relay wins on Wednesday, including a meet record in the 200 medley, La Salle scored 280 points and easily outpaced second-place North Allegheny.

"I'm just so proud of the team," Explorers coach Frank Lichtner said. "It was a much younger team after the last two years, yet they decided they were going to win. I really mean that. They decided that they wanted to win again, and they went out and did it."

The Explorers won their third straight state title in their sixth season of PIAA competition, with a 24-member team that had only three seniors.

"We're returning a ton of people next year," Lichtner said.

Two other local boys' champions were crowned Thursday:

Hatboro-Horsham's Michael Thomas claimed the 100 backstroke in 46.65 seconds. Thomas McCormick of West Chester Henderson won the 100 breaststroke in 54.92.

La Salle earned silver medals Thursday from Michael McBryan in the 100 breaststroke and its 400 freestyle relay team.

Two girls' divers from area AAA schools also medaled Thursday. Upper Dublin's Corey Johnson was second, and Marie Yacopino of North Penn placed third.

Council Rock North's Tommie Dillione earned her second medal by finishing third in the 500 freestyle.
