THOSE FOLKS inclined to think of Maurice "Doo-Wop" Watson as a pump-machine scorer must not have witnessed the feature attraction of the recent Public League Coaches' All-Star Classic.

Or any of his games, really.

Yes, Watson scored 17 points that night. But he also dished 11 assists, posting many off passes that caused numerous eyebrows to raise.

Nothin' new there.

Maurice Watson, a 5-10 senior guard/whirlwind from Boys' Latin Charter, is our choice for Player of the Year in connection with the 2011-12 Daily News All-City Basketball Team.

The Boston University commit scored 697 points in 32 games (21.8 average) while leading the Warriors (25-7) - coached by his father, Maurice Sr.; largely a three-man squad - to the Pub final and a spot in the semifinal round of the Class AAA state playoffs. He also averaged five rebounds, 7.5 assists and 3.2 steals.

Boys' Latin joined the Pub when Watson was a freshman. The win totals improved each season (13, 17, 19, 25) and he led the school to an overall record of 74-32 while never missing a game.

His career produced 2,356 points (22.2 average), the No. 2 total in city-leagues history to the 2,681 rung up by 2003 Strawberry Mansion grad Maureece "The Scorelord" Rice.

* Savon Goodman, Constitution: A runner and jumper of the first order, this 6-7 senior forward/center scored 800 points in 31 games (25.8) and averaged 14.2 rebounds while leading the Generals (23-9) to the overall PL and Class A state titles. Also posted two steals/blocks per game (and likely five dunks). Transfer from Academy of the New Church. Back on the market after decommitting from Villanova.

* Stephen Vasturia, St. Joseph's Prep: Smooth and athletic, this 6-3 junior combo guard scored 589 points in 27 games (21.8) for the 21-6 Hawks, a Catholic League finalist. Posted shooting percentages of 51 (floor), 43 (threes) and 91 (foul line) while adding 9.2 rebounds for a squad with not even a hint of a true inside player. Assist ratio was 2-to-1. Already committed to Notre Dame.

* Daiquan Walker, Constitution: His heady, unselfish and feisty play was a major reason the Generals, after some early hiccups, finished the season with a 14-game winning streak. The 6-2 senior, a combo guard, scored 562 points in 31 games (18.1) while also posting averages of eight assists and 3.5 steals. Netted 1,200 career points. Widespread Division I interest.

* Brendan Kilpatrick, Malvern: Slinky and surprisingly explosive, this 6-5 senior wing guard, bound for Vermont, earned Inter-Ac MVP honors for a second consecutive season for leading the Friars (24-3) to their first back-to-back titles since 1976-77. Scored 427 points in 27 games (15.8) while adding seven rebounds and 4.5 assists per game. Posted 1,290 career points.

Our Coach of the Year is Rob Moore, of Constitution, who led the Generals to two championships (overall Pub, Class A state) in just their third year of varsity competition.

The squad's seminal moment occurred on Jan. 17. Upset that four starters recently had been selfish and/or unfocused and/or lazy, Moore benched them for a game at Philadelphia Electrical & Technology Charter. His original plan was to let them play in the second half if the score was close. ConHigh led at intermission, 34-32, so Moore allowed the replacement crew to finish. The result was a 58-56 loss, but the message was received. The Generals finished the season with 14 consecutive wins.
