Wood rolls past Dobbins for Dist. 12 title

Archbishop Wood notched six touchdowns in the opening 19 minutes and easily downed Dobbins, 49-0, Saturday at Northeast to claim its fourth consecutive PIAA District 12 Class AAA football championship.

Joey Monaghan completed 13 of 15 passes for 199 yards and four touchdowns in the first half as the Vikings (11-1), ranked No. 1 in Southeastern Pennsylvania by The Inquirer, built a 42-0 advantage.

Monaghan, a senior lefthander, hit Kyle Adkins for scores of 11 and 7 yards in the first quarter. In the second period, he connected with Nate Smith and Colin Thompson for TDs of 30 and 11 yards, respectively.

Smith returned a punt 62 yards for a first-quarter score that put Wood in front, 21-0. Soon after, Ryan McMullin followed his 30-yard reception with a 7-yard TD burst.

Dobbins was held to 25 yards (22 rushing, 3 passing) of offense in the first half. The Mustangs (9-3) were stopped behind the line of scrimmage on six of 12 first-quarter rushing attempts.

The Vikings, who began using their second-team offense late in the second quarter, closed the scoring on sophomore reserve Kendall Singleton's 3-yard run late in the third quarter. It capped a 14-play, 87-yard drive.

Thanks to a 38-yard kickoff return by Kevin Norris, Dobbins threatened to score early in the third quarter. But on second and 8 from the Wood 22, Delane Hart's rushed throw toward the end zone was picked off at the 4-yard line by Benji Abercrombie.

In a Class AAA state quarterfinal the weekend of Dec. 2-3, the Vikings will meet the winner of Friday's District 1 championship between Phoenixville (9-3) and Pottsgrove (10-2).

Wood has won its four district titles by a combined score of 191-20.
