Steve Mason to the Winnipeg Jets? Maybe, but maybe not

The former Flyer has talked to the Jets, but his agent said he's talking to many teams.

Reports have emerged this week that Steve Mason, the veteran Flyers goaltender who's now a free agent, has been talking to the Winnipeg Jets.

"The Jets have checked in with the camp of pending unrestricted free agent Steve Mason during the courting period," the Winnipeg Sun's Ken Wiebe wrote Tuesday. Free agency officially begins Saturday at noon Eastern, but teams can already start talking to players behind the scenes.

On Wednesday, TSN's Bob McKenzie upped the ante by calling the Jets' interest in Mason "significant":

But just when it seemed as if Mason might really be on the verge of making the long trek to Canada's heartland, his agent hit the brakes.

"Yes, we are considering the Jets, but we are considering every open No. 1 goaltending spot, as we should be, until those spots get filled," Mason's agent Anton Thun told the Winnipeg Free Press' Mike Sawatzky.

Thun told Sam Carchidi on Thursday afternoon that Mason will not be returning to the Flyers.
