It's been known since March of 2016 that the Flyers and Penguins would play an outdoor hockey game in Philadelphia at some point in 2019.

On Sunday night, the details became official.

NBC's Dan Patrick announced during the network's pregame show for the Eagles-Cowboys game that Lincoln Financial Field will host its first ever hockey game on Feb. 23, 2019.

The Flyers-Penguins matchup will be part of the NHL's Stadium Series. NBC will broadcast the game (which is part of why they announced it).

"Lincoln Financial Field will provide a perfect setting for these cross-state opponents and their passionate fan bases," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement.

When the two teams met at Pittsburgh's Heinz Field this past February, the game drew a sellout crowd of 67,318. Lincoln Financial Field's listed capacity is 69,176, though it's not known exactly how many seats will be available for the hockey game.

"We are proud to be able to showcase our city, fans and team for such a great event," Flyers president Paul Holmgren said.

This will be the Flyers' fourth outdoor game, and the second they've hosted. In addition to last season's game at Pittsburgh, they played the Boston Bruins at Fenway Park in 2010 and the New York Rangers at Citizens Bank Park in 2012. The Flyers lost all three of those contests.

So far, the NHL has announced one other outdoor game for the 2018-19 season. The Winter Classic on New Year's Day will feature the Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks at Notre Dame Stadium. It's not known yet whether there will be another beyond these two. There are three outdoor games on the calendar this season, and there were four last season.

The most outdoor games played in one season was six in 2014.
