Giroux says his hands are fine

POSTED: Wednesday, March 7, 2012, 10:21 AM

Max Talbot and Danny Briere both acknowledged that Claude Giroux is “a little banged up right now,” following the Flyers’ win over Detroit on Tuesday night.

But Giroux wouldn’t entertain the thought of playing at less than 100 percent.

When asked why he didn’t take more than 2 faceoffs against Detroit, with Scott Hartnell taking the majority of his line’s draws, Giroux said it was just practice for the playoffs.

Giroux, 23, was seen walking around the Flyers’ locker room well after the game with ice bags on both hands – believed to be as a result from a slash by Washington’s Jason Chimera on Sunday night.

Prior to Tuesday's game, Hartnell had taken just 18 career faceoffs. Giroux had squared off in 1,259. Hartnell took 16 faceoffs on Tuesday against Detroit, winning 7-of-9. Giroux was 0-for-2.

“Hartsy has been good at faceoffs and in the playoffs sometimes I get kicked out so we want Hartsy to get in there,” Giroux said. “He did a good job tonight, and he has a heavy stick and he works hard for faceoffs.”

When asked about it after the game, coach Peter Laviolette scoffed at a reporter who said Giroux was not 100 percent healthy.

“Did somebody say he wasn’t 100 percent?” Laviolette asked.

All right, then.

Either way, it was a gritty effort for Giroux, who posted 2 points – and a beautiful breakaway goal – and also had 7 attempted shots, 2 hits, 2 takeaways and 3 blocked shots.

“He is our leader,” Talbot said. “He plays with energy, and he competes. When you see a guy like that, who is a little banged up right now, and he goes and plays his heart out, you want to go on the ice and do the same thing. It was definitely a great effort by him.”

SLAP SHOTS: Rookie Eric Wellwood celebrated his 22nd birthday on Tuesday … Detroit still has not won a regular season game in Philadelphia since Jan. 1997 … The Red Wings’ 21 shots in the third period marked the third time this season the Flyers have allowed that many in one of the final two periods (also: Columbus’ third period on Nov. 5, New Jersey’s second period on Nov. 3) … The Flyers are not practicing on Wednesday … Ilya Bryzgalov has a .948 save percentage and 1.67 goals against-average during the Flyers’ current 3-game winning streak, which is their first since Dec. 2-15.

Hartnell was 7 for 9 on faceoffs. Let him do it more often.

To our genius beat writers: The Flyers and Giroux cannot acknowledge his busted hand unless they want every opposing player in the league going slash happy on him. The less press his injury gets the safer he will be. But they couldn't fool you guys. You really cracked the case, keep up the good work. Meanwhile we have no clue why Timmonen and Meszaros are out of the lineup and when they'll be back. Good stuff.

Was Hartnell 7 for 9 on faceoffs? Should they let him do it more often?

Hello robynk. Here is some 'math for today's antagonist': Hartnell took 16 faceoffs. Hartnell won 7 faceoffs. Hartnell lost 9 faceoffs. 7 plus 9 equals 16. Yey. Isn't that dope how that adds up? http://tsn.ca/nhl/scores/boxscore/?id=15055 (FOL means Face Offs LOST)

Well it would be good if you got your stats correct there Frank. Hartnell went 7-16 in the dot. 44% isn't bad but it's not 7-9. Stan the caddy was right though boys.

As stated in the article, had you actually read it before commenting: "Prior to Tuesday's game, Hartnell had taken just 18 career faceoffs. Giroux had squared off in 1,259. Hartnell took 16 faceoffs on Tuesday against Detroit, winning 7-of-9. Giroux was 0-for-2."

his hands looked fine on his goal - that is for sure. Chimera is punk- he got hit clean then went out slashing Giroux and someone else right after that. He should have been given an elbow to the head and sent promptly to the hospital.

I'm trying to imagine what would have happened if 'Bobby Clark got slashed....Maybe the Flyboys should watch some vintage films.

dogman5: Actually, it was Clarkie who did all the slashing...

Quite right! However if you looked at Clarke the wrong way you would be in line for a stern correction from #8. Something to be feared!!!

I realize teams don't want opponents to know everything. But I am SO tired of the way the Flyers have handled injuries for years.
The guy is walking around with ice bags on his hands and the coach is laughing at a reporter who suggests he's not 100-percent?

Teams don't want opponents to know ANYthing. That said, perhaps it's not as much as the opponents as it is the media they don't want to know. Media, especially in this town, has a special way of beating a dead horse to death regardless of fact.
Also, if you hear a guy is icing his hands, we all know that he's hurting there, so why would a clever guy like you need official confirmation from the team?
