Flyers re-sign Powe to 1-year deal

POSTED: Thursday, July 22, 2010, 4:05 AM
Darroll Powe

UPDATE 2:

Here are comments from Darrell Powe following his signing with the Flyers:

Q: What is your reaction after signing with the Flyers?

DP: “Obviously, I am very excited. The Flyers are a great organization. They have been good to me all along so to sign back with the Flyers is exactly what I want and I look forward to next season.”

Q: Speaking of next season, what are the expectations of this team?

DP: “We expect to go all the way next season. We have a good team coming in and we all got a taste of things last year. We should all be motivated to get back where we were last year and finish the job this time.”

Q: What can you say about Philadelphia’s offseason acquisitions?

DP: “I think they are going to help our team. We’ve added some size and a little bit of finesse out there. These will be a couple of more pieces to the puzzle and will hopefully help us get to where we were last year.”

UPDATED: Along with confirming the Powe signed, the Flyers announced they have signed three others to contracts: defenseman Dan Jancevski and forwards Matt Clackson and David Laliberte.

Laliberte, 24, recorded 46 points (18G,28A) in 66 games with the Adirondack Phantoms, in the AHL, and had three points in 11 games with the Flyers.

Clackson, 25, spent the entire season with Adirondack, where he posted six points (2G,4A) and 174 penalty minutes in 60 games with the Phantoms.

Jancevski, 29, appeared in 78 regular season games with the Texas Stars, the Dallas Stars’ AHL affiliate, where he recorded 23 points (3G,20A) and 71 penalty minutes.

EARLIER

The Flyers and restricted free agent forward Darroll Powe agreed to a one-year deal yesterday, the Daily News has learned.

Powe, 25, will earn $725,000 for the upcoming season in a one-way contract – meaning the Flyers plan to have him on their roster throughout the season. It’s a 36-percent raise from the $532,500 he earned last year.

Powe will be a restricted free agent again next season.

Last season, the Princeton University graduate and scrappy forward posted 9 goals and 6 assists for 15 points over 63 games. He missed 19 games with a dislocated right shoulder last November and December. He also played in all 23 playoff games.

Powe’s signing likely rounds out the Flyers’ depth chart at the forward position, giving coach Peter Laviolette 14 forwards to manage in training camp. With Blair Betts likely not available at the start of the season because of an offseason shoulder surgery, Powe would fit in the top 12 in Betts’ absence. That would leave room for Riley Cote as the extra forward until Betts can return.

With 14 forwards, 8 defensemen and 2 goalies – at least two players more than the Flyers need to carry – they have approximately $327,737 remaining in salary cap space.

Why again are they wasting 2.725 million in cap space to Shelley, Carcillo, and Cote? Granted, Cote will most likely (one would think) be either bought out or sent to the minors, but that still leaves 2.175 in cap space tied up between 2 guys who will play no more than 5 minutes per game in the playoffs. Then there's the utterly ridiculous 1.7 mill that the 7th defenseman will be occupying. Looks like Holmgren slept through Salary Cap 101.

There has to be another move, right? They're going to carry 8 dmen? I've got to think they're going to waive Cote and give one of their young guys a chance as the extra forward, not that I don't appreciate everything Cote has given this team.

If Testwuide has a strong enough camp to take a spot on the team, Walker or Bartulis will be moved somehow. Cote's gotta be waived.

sorry to break it to you carcillo haters, but danny will be right back alongside his fellow ontario buddy mike richards. shelley takes a lot of pressure of carcillo. look for his majors to go way down. despite the haters, carcillo has some talent other than racking up PIMs. he can score 20 goals on the right line. much like hartnell, carcillo will provide the sandpaper for richards and whatever R wing he is given.

Captain obvious here...by far not the worst signing of the off season. With Betts out until November Powe will be the fourth line center and one of the PK guys...Shelley, Carcillo, & Walker sure won't take Betts' spot as a PK guy.

I still think the flyers need a goalie.

Everybody forgets Carcillo's game winner in OT vs the Devils -

Not forgetting Carcillo's gamewinnner, Michael, remembering that he was scratched for most of the finals vs Chicago though

What Powe brings to the team is a steal for that money. He is always moving his feet, isn't afraid to throw a check (even if it means he is the only one who falls) and never takes dumb penalties. Also, if signing Shelly was a move to develop Carcillo... waste of time. This team doesn't need 'carbomb.' But we have him...(sadface).

wish they wouldve signed him for longer. powe is a great young 4th liner who is only gonna get better. and im looking forward to watching carcillo this year. he made huge strides in his game last year so let's just wait and see. now if there were only a way to get rid of shelley and walker. i just can't figure either of those moves out.

I think that stat on cap space is misleading.....if they drop a D to the Phantoms, much more money avail.

I agree with Champ, and pj he was scracthed because of injury for quite a few of those games. Carcillo may not be everyone's favorite, but i love what he brings. He's our version of Darcy Tucker..we haven't had a guy like him since the Rat! I'm all aboot Carcillo! Now please get a NON AHL goalie!! Leighton is a AHL lifer or a backup at best, as i've said many times with that forcefield defense i'm putting up his numbers.

I agree with conceptual_bro, and think Testuwide has a shot at the roster (if there is cap space).

hey Chief, what great goalies are available? or who would you be willing to trade to get one? Roy and Hasek and in their 50s last I checked, or maybe you're expecting one of the other teams to trade us their good goalie just to help us out--geez, if Kolb sucks maybe the Patriots will trade us Brady, just bec "we need a QB". Just about everybody "needs a goalie", but Leighton is fine with good help in front of him.
