NHL negotiations resuming today

THE NHL and its locked-out players will resume negotiations Tuesday in Toronto after a 4-day break following 2 days of meetings last week.

THE NHL and its locked-out players will resume negotiations Tuesday in Toronto after a 4-day break following 2 days of meetings last week.

The announcement Monday comes on the same day players missed their first scheduled paycheck of the regular season. The NHL has called off 82 games through Oct. 24 - the first 2 weeks of the season. More cancellations likely will be made soon if a deal isn't reached.

An agenda is not yet set for the talks that shift to the union's office from league headquarters. But the sides will be looking to make headway on the core economic issue - the division of hockey-related revenue. That issue took a back seat in New York last week when the league and union worked on secondary matters that also must be resolved.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly are expected to meet with union executive director Donald Fehr and NHLPA special counsel Steve Fehr.

Bettman and Donald Fehr took part only briefly during last week's negotiations that featured four separate bargaining sessions.

Colleges *

The NCAA will relocate several championship events scheduled for New Jersey in 2013 because of a new state law allowing sports wagering on professional and collegiate games: the Division I men's and women's swimming and diving regionals in Piscataway; Division I women's basketball regional in Trenton; Division III men's volleyball championship in Hoboken; and the Division II and III women's lacrosse championships in Montclair.

* No. 3 Florida should have five injured starters back for Saturday's game against No. 9 South Carolina: linebacker Jelani Jenkins, defensive end Dominique Easley, center Jon Harrison, guard James Wilson and left tackle Xavier Nixon. They missed all or part of Saturday's 31-17 win at Vanderbilt.

* Texas Tech coach Tommy Tuberville said linebacker Daniel Cobb was cleared of a felony burglary charge stemming from his arrest in August. Cobb, who has started practicing with the 18th-ranked Red Raiders, is expected to play against TCU on Saturday.

* The Mountain West Conference reprimanded Wyoming coach Dave Christensen for his actions and comments after the Cowboys' 28-27 loss to Air Force. After the game, Christensen confronted Air Force coach Troy Calhoun on the field and questioned whether Falcons quarterback Connor Dietz was really injured when he left the game for one play with about 8 minutes left in the fourth quarter and Wyoming leading, 27-21. He said the several minutes that trainers attended to Dietz gave Air Force time to strategize the next play. In interviews after the game, Christensen continued to criticize Air Force, saying he didn't believe Dietz was hurt.

Auto Racing *

NASCAR and Fox Sports Media Group announced a $2.4 billion, 8-year extension that runs through 2022 and keeps the prestigious Daytona 500 and first third of the Sprint Cup Series on the network.

A.J. Allmendinger will get another start with Phoenix Racing this weekend at Kansas Speedway. Phoenix general manager Steve Barkdoll said the team was pleased with Allmendinger's performance at Charlotte Motor Speedway, where he finished 24th in his first race since his July suspension for failing a random drug test.

Philly File *

Villanova (5-2), coming off a 38-14 win at then-No. 3 Old Dominion, has moved into the FCS rankings at No. 24. Quarterback John Robertson, who accounted for 340 yards and four scores, is the Sports Network's national freshman of the week, and the Colonial Athletic Association's Rookie of the Week for the fourth time. Defensive back Eric Loper is the CAA's Defensive Player of the Week.

* Penn senior punter Scott Lopano was named Ivy League Special Teams Player of the Week. During a win over Columbia, Lopano became just the second Quaker to record more than 400 punt yards in a game.

* The Ivan "Pick" Brown Memorial Foundation, which honors the memory of the former Monsignor Bonner/St. Joseph's basketball star and helps youth and adults through various programs, has received a $1,000 grant from the Henrietta Tower Wurts Memorial. Wurts died in 1933 and was deeply committed to community service.

* Ben Franklin product Brian Smith and Olney's Mike Keyes have been added to the roster of And1's traveling basketball team.

Olympics *

Olympic BMX cyclist Kyle Bennett was killed in an automobile accident in eastern Texas. He was 33. Bennett was a three-time BMX world champion and won an automatic spot on the first U.S. BMX Olympic team in 2008.
