Panthers forward David Booth is wheeled off the ice after being hit in the jaw by Mike Richards.

The NHL's decision yesterday not to suspend Flyers captain Mike Richards for a jarring open-ice hit on Florida's David Booth was greeted with disappointment by those connected to the Panthers.

But the decision has been made and "we've got to move on," Florida general manager Randy Sexton told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel yesterday.

Richards leveled Booth on Saturday, knocking him unconscious and sending him to the hospital with a shoulder-to-jaw check in the middle of the ice.

Replays showed Richards had one skate in the air as he made the hit. It was inconclusive as to whether the other skate was in the air at the time.

If the NHL deemed that both feet were in the air before he made the hit, Richards would have been suspended, but the league agreed with the assessment of Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren - that Richards left his feet only after contact was made.

Richards was in the lineup last night against visiting San Jose.

Booth, a 24-year-old left winger, spent Saturday night at Pennsylvania Hospital before being released yesterday morning and returning to Florida. Sexton said Booth had no neck damage but suffered a concussion and a cut above his eye that needed stitches. The Panthers will monitor him closely.

Blood was on the ice after the violent collision, and Booth was motionless for several minutes.

Sexton told the Sun-Sentinel that he spoke with Booth by telephone for 10 minutes yesterday morning and was "pleasantly surprised" at how Booth sounded. He said Booth was "clearly coherent."

"He was positive, he was upbeat, he wasn't dull," Sexton said. "You know, sometimes you talk to a guy after a concussion and he's a little dull? He wasn't dull at all."

Sexton guessed that Booth would miss at least three games.

The Flyers and Florida don't meet again until Dec. 21, at the Wachovia Center.

You know, as a fan, you try to put yourself in the shoes of other teams/players, because you don't want anyone to be hurt playing hockey. You really don't. But you know what? The reason David Booth got smoked was because he was looking back at his pass while skating in the middle of the ice. That's insanity. If David Booth lets that pass go and pays attention to his surroundings, he doesn't get laid out. As a fan, I never cried when Eric Lindros got smoked, because bottom line, Lindros used to skate with his head down. Richards didn't charge, didn't elbow Booth in the head. From where Booth was on the ice and where he was going, he REALLY, REALLY, REALLY needed to look where HE was going, not where his pass went. Tough hit, but it's a tough sport.

When you watch the replay, especially in slow motion, Richards was coasting, not charging, crouched slightly, and tucked his arm to deliver a shoulder to shoulder hit. Just prior to impact, Booth turns his head (while leaning forward, as you do when skating forward) and takes the shoulder on his chin. It is unfortunate, unlucky for Booth, and you hope he suffers no long term effects. But it was the "perfect storm" in essence, as all those little things contributed to a clean, legal, and scary hit. But not dirty, certainly not with intent to injure, and the NHL has clearly takken that viewpoint by not suspending him.

Get back to me when Scott Stevens gets suspended. Since that'll never happen (since he doesn't play anymore), I don't care how bad the guy got hurt. BOO HOO!

He didn't deserve a suspension. It was a clean hit in the middle of the ice. There should not have even been a penalty assessed. Keep your head up, you're in the pro's now.
