Chiefs coach Andy Reid will remain with the team after receiving a contract extension but general manager John Dorsey is out effective immediately, the team announced Thursday.

Team chairman Clark Hunt said in a release that he told Dorsey he wouldn't extend his contract beyond this season, but "after consideration, we felt it was in his best interests and the best interests of the team to part ways now."

"This decision, while a difficult one, allows John to pursue other opportunities as we continue our preparations for the upcoming season and the seasons to come," Hunt said. "My family and I sincerely appreciate John's work over the last four-and-a-half years, and we wish him nothing but the best in the future."

Before announcing Dorsey had been fired, the Chiefs announced a contract extension for Reid, who, like Dorsey was entering the final year of his original five-year contract. Terms were not disclosed.

Reid, 59, was hired in 2013 by the Chiefs and is 43-21 in four seasons in Kansas City.

"My family and I have been very pleased by the success the franchise has sustained over the last four seasons under Coach Reid," Hunt said in a release. "He has already established himself over the last four seasons as one of the best coaches in the league, and he is well on his way to solidifying a place among the all-time greats."

The Chiefs have made three playoff appearances under Reid with a 1-3 record in those games. The Chiefs were 12-4 last season and won the AFC West Division for the first time in the Reid era.

Reid is entering his 19th season as a NFL coach, having spent his first 14 years with the Philadelphia Eagles.

"I'd like to thank Clark and the entire Hunt family for the opportunity to continue my coaching career here in Kansas City," Reid said in the release. "We've made quite a bit of progress over the last four seasons, but we are not done yet.

"We are going to continue to work towards our ultimate goal of winning championships. I've been blessed by the support of the community, our fans, the Hunt family and the entire Chiefs staff. I'm looking forward to the years ahead as the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs."

Reid took over the Chiefs after the 2012 team finished 2-14 under Romeo Crennel. The Chiefs hired Reid and nine days later hired Dorsey.

In the Reid/Dorsey era, the Chiefs won their first playoff game since the 1993 season when they beat the Houston Texans in the AFC wild-card round following the 2015 season. The team's 22-4 record over the past 26 games is the best in the NFL over that span, and the Chiefs have won 11 straight games against AFC West opponents.

The Reid extension coincides with the drafting of quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs used a first-round selection, trading next year's No. 1 selection and moving up 17 spots, to select Mahomes at No. 10. He was the first Chiefs quarterback selected in the first round since 1983.

Reid's extension indicates he'll be guiding Mahomes, who is targeted to eventually succeed starter Alex Smith.
