Former Eagle Jeremiah Trotter rips Andy Reid's coaching abilities

POSTED: Thursday, January 3, 2013, 4:57 PM

On the whole, was Andy Reid a plus or a minus for the Birds?
He was a plus -- Nine playoffs are nothing to sneeze at.
He was a minus – Zero parades. ‘Nuff said.
I’m conflicted -- Wish he’d actually done a better job.

On Thursday, as part of Mike Missanelli’s Football Roundtable on 97.5 The Fanatic, former Eagles linebacker Jeremiah Trotter called out ex-coach Andy Reid over his in-game coaching abilities, saying that he was often out-coached in big games.

"If it came down to both teams were even, talent-wise, I think the opponent's team would win if it came down to coaching," Trotter told Missanelli and ESPN's Sal Paolantonio.

"Andy Reid got out-coached in a lot of games, man, a lot of big games," Trotter continued. "Time outs, running the football, you know."

His play-calling decisions also affected the psyche of the defensive players and coaches, according to Trotter.

"As a defense, we understood we passed the ball too much. You know, there's times we're sitting over there like, 'Man, listen. Just get us a couple of first downs so we can get a break.' And I'm sure it frustrated Jim Johnson also."

Trotter spent a total of eight seasons with the Eagles (1998-2001; 2004-2006; 2009), seven of them under Reid, including all four of his Pro-Bowl seasons and both of his All-Pro years.

Trotter also spent time with the Washington Redskins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, so he understands the landscape of the NFL.

So how does the 11-year-vet-turned-radio-host rate Reid as head coach?

"On a scale of one to 10, 10 being great, I give [Reid] a seven and a half or eight as a coach."

Who would be a 10? According to Trotter, that's Patriot's coach Bill Belicheck.

Yeah, he ripped him...he also gave him some compliments, ergo 7.5 to 8.

Couldn't possibly have a headline that just said Trot talks Reid though. Better something ala the National Enquirer.

So according to Trotter, Reid really did "need to do a better job". LOL.. Howard Eskin must be so confused now that two loves of his life are feuding.

Typical mis leading headline AGAIN.Trot is asked a question and answers it truthfully with a fair -even good assessment and he is ripping Andy.Anything to draw interest ans contention and it worked as it got me to look.
Baseball -batter steps out--manager comes out--anything` to give a player rest--

Football 3 and out-quick=passes-defense back in --wears down the defense-Trot said it like it is-

-Did/Does Andy have flaws-absolutely--but when does the piling on stop? -or is there nothing else to write or talk about.

Sounds like Trot has the winter blues. Best coach in Eagles history even at an 8. Only coach to do anything worth mentioning in 40 years. Just wait until next year to see.

Trotter rated Reid a "7 1/2 to 8" out of 10 "as a coach" while criticizing him for the same things that everyone else has criticized him ... that's not "ripping" him ..when do these dishonest and hypocritical writers address the true imbecile in this city: Clueless Rube who destroyed a championship caliber despite one of the top budgets in baesball, with awful extensions, signings, trades and squandering what had been a top farm system beore he pi#$ed it away

Andy thought he could run up the score passing the ball and then run the ball when he got a big lead, problem is he usually fell behind and passed even more. Also, he always looked for the least obvious play and that rarely worked. He's KCs problem now...

Stating the obvious is not ripping Reid. The headline writer is the one who needs the ripping. This is not the National Enquirer, or is it?

I was listening at the time he said it. He was just being honest, and I think many of the Eagles fans would agree. He also had some glowing comments about Belicheck from a Patriot player that he didn't name. Basically the player said it's amazing how much he knows as a coach.

    It's about time.
How can a coach throw when a defense has 4 in the box?
How can a coach set up his QB in a naked shotgun when the QB
is getting killed behind an overmatched oline?
That's the genius of Andy Reid.

Stats show giving McCoy 20 touches and limiting the QB throws to 30 delivers a higher probability of a win. Reid would throw with Jim Brown and Adrian Peterson in the backfield. Reid may be a nice guy and even personable but he was easily and quite often outcoached.

The offense is predictable and yet the eagles will run play action which fools no one. You just might have to run the ball once in a while to make play action effective.

Did you see what Shanahan did with a better, more mobile QB that had a sore leg. He ran the ball 42 times and let RG pass 18 times and the skins won.

For an Eagles team that had a boatload of turnovers and a bad oline, one would think running is a good option, even if you only gain a couple yards. Stay close, shorten the game and make a play but more importantly...don't beat yourself with turnovers and INTs.

Good luck in KC. The chiefs have a good running back who'll never see the ball again.

Any coach worth a darn wouldn't let his QB get hit 10-12 times a game and keep throwing...only the genius of Andy Reid would do that.

Give me Andy at home in a big playoff game and the opposition will win every time, and they did...we lived it for 14 years on reid's 5 year plan. Reid is by far the worst game day coach in the NFL.

Thanks for telling it like it is Trot!
