Eagles never beat a winner under Chip Kelly?

Over the weekend, a caller to 97.5 The Fanatic claimed that the Eagles under Chip Kelly have yet to beat a single winning team.

Defeating Jacksonville at the Linc on Sunday didn't change a thing, because the Jaguars were 0-0 this season and 4-12 last season.

The provocative statement went unchallenged on-air, so we were spurred to do a little research.

Nope, sorry, the proclamation proved to be quite wrong – though a little creative redefining does suggest the 2013 campaign wasn't exactly filled with juggernauts.

Here are seven accurate statements, as far as well we could tell.

5 teams had winning records the week the Eagles beat them.

Week 10: @ Green Bay Packers (5-3 at the time), Eagles won 27-13.
Week 13: Arizona Cardinals (7-5), Eagles won 24-21.
Week 14: Detroit Lions (7-5), Eagles won 34-20.
Week 16: Chicago Bears (8-6), Eagles won 54-11.
Week 17: @ Dallas Cowboys (8-7), Eagles won 24-22.

So the Eagles won half of their 10 games last season against teams with winning records at the time.

The Birds were actually 5-2 against such teams, losing only to Kansas City (Week 3) and Denver (Week 4). (The San Diego Chargers finished with a winning record, but were 0-1 when they beat the Eagles in Week 2.)

The Eagles beat 5 winners just in the second half of the season.

Same stats as above, but adding the observation that Birds compiled these wins in the last eight games.

The Eagles beat 2 teams that finished with winning records.

Week 10: @ Green Bay Packers (finished 8-7-1).
Week 13: Arizona Cardinals (10-6).

Where are the other three teams? The Eagles, to their credit, contributed to late-season downslides that cost three teams winning records. The Lions lost the next two games to finish 7-9. The Bears lost their final game to finish 8-8, and the Cowboys also finished 8-8 after losing to the Eagles in the final week of the regular season.

The Eagles beat 2 teams with a better record than Philly at the time.

Week 10: @ Green Bay Packers (5-3), Eagles (5-4).
Week 13: Arizona Cardinals (7-5), Eagles (6-5).

In the Lions and Bears games, the teams had equal records.

The Eagles beat 1 team that went on to make the playoffs.

Against playoff-bound teams, the Eagles went 1-3, beating Green Bay, but losing early in the season to San Diego (Week 2), Kansas City (Week 3) and Denver (Week 4).

Note: Arizona was a rare 10-6 team that failed to make the playoffs, so it's pretty weaselly to discount that victory.

Also note the wording "went on to make the playoffs." One could say the Eagles beat a playoff team in Week One, because the Washington Redskins made the playoffs the season before.

The Eagles didn't beat a team with its No. 1 quarterback that went on to make the playoffs.

True. Aaron Rogers was hurt and missed the Eagles game.

On the other hand, Arizona won more games than Green Bay, and the Eagles beat the Cardinals with their No. 1 quarterback, Carson Palmer.

The Eagles didn't beat a team that won a playoff game.

True. A fairly high standard (or unfairly high), especially for a first-year coach.

The Eagles lost to three teams that won playoff games: San Diego, Denver and New Orleans (counting their victory over the Eagles). The Birds also lost to Kansas City in the regular season, but Andy Reid's team collapsed in the first round of the playoffs.

There you go. Choose your spin.

Negative: The 2013 Birds didn't beat any world-beaters.

Positive: The Eagles beat five winners just in the second half of the season (helping ruin the season for several of them).
